View Full Version : IE 5 Problem
Moogie

I can no longer "view/source". When I do, nothing happens. I've checked the options but couldn't find anything related to that. I checked help but couldn't find any information on the topic.
I rebooted and still had the problem?
Any suggestions? What am I missing?

I have the same problem with IE6! :swear:
At the beginning of a new fresh setup of my win2k-cruncher I was able to view sources of a page. But since some time I'm not able to do it too... and I don't know what to do :dunno:
What OS and what servicepacks do you have installed? (I actually have SP4 installed)

Win2K, SP2
It just stopped working within the last week or so.
:dunno:

Well thanks peeps. I did not know I had that problem until I read these posts, but after checking I now have the same problem as you chaps. Thanks again ;)
I am using IE6 + XP with latest patches and SP.

hmm, I thought it would be a "special feature" of SP4 on w2k, but you have SP2...
So I don't know what it could be... in the near future I'll use Mozilla... I hope the source-viewer works forever there :D

It's frustrating. I'm hoping someone has an idea of what is going on.

It's a conspiracy against all Free-DC members, I tell you!
Running WinXP Prof. with all updates and it works here :moon:  :p
It's not a big problem - just download Mozilla, Firebird or Opera - much better browsers ;)

Still works on XP sp2, IE 6 over here ;)
Still works on IE 5, w2k ...
Look for additional features for the browser, web fonts etc.

Just found something at microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;154168
Didn't read through it, but I'll do now...

Doesn't look like it applies to us.

Check this out first :)
http://www.notepad-replacements.com/viewsource.html
and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=163606
and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=179829
The problem is quite easily solved:
Microsoft - in its great wisdom about what users really want and need - chose to have some interesting defaults for Explorer that prevent it from working properly after a while.
As diskspace is "cheap" and Micro$oft seems to want you to buy more, the default of IE saves "temporary internet files" for every web page you ever visited - and doesn't delete it until you tell it to! Not only does this rack up quite some space after a while, also the View Source command stops working.
Solution: In your internet options of Explorer first delete all temporary internet files, then change your settings to use only 20 megs of diskspace to store such data (that is PLENTY and should be the default), no matter how large your drive is. And finally you could (optional) go to advanced settings and under security check the box next to "empty temp files on exit".
Problem solved! Magically, your View Sorce command works again as advertised!

OK, read it... you're right Moogie!
But there are more articles about that: http://search.microsoft.com/search/results.aspx?View=en-us&p=1&s=0&c=3&st=b&qu=internet+explorer+view+source&na=30 (I hope that link works)

I'll take a look at this but what I don't understand is why it STOPPED working. I use NoteTab Light and it's always worked before.
Hmmmmmm

Perhaps that is a reason:
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if there are too many files in the Temporary Internet Files folder or if Notepad.exe is missing or damaged.
Found on http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306907
Hmm, I never cleaned my temporary internet files folder :D I'll try this...
EDIT: wow, that takes long... there are many files to delete :D

I'm going to try it too.

Something I do on all the Windoze PC's I admin:
Fire up IE. Then Tools > Internet Options > Settings
Change the amount of disk space to 10 to 12 MB.
Works like a champ! Speeds up the whole works! Avoids probs! :D
BTW, set Days to keep pages in History to something reasonable, like a week.
Moogie
09-27-2003, 02:31 PM
Works for me too! I'll change the settings to 10-12 instead of 20 as suggested in IBs post. It took about 5 minutes to delete all of the temp. files.
Thanks for all of your help!!!!!!!!

Wow! That thread grew up fast!
19 posts and 81 times viewed at the moment within one hour... not bad... and the only reason was the micro$oft IE :D

1. That's what themes are for - you might wanna try this one: http://themes.mozdev.org/themes/ie.html ;)
Personally, I like the pinball theme: http://themes.mozdev.org/themes/pinball.html
If you try Mozilla Firebird, you'll notice it doesn't exactly look like Netscape as default either :)
2. You don't *have* to use tabs, but you have to option if you like
I personally *love* them :)

LOL! :rotfl:
Is it just me or does IB sound like a grouchy old guy:
"Bah! That new fangled browser stuff don't impress me... Back in my day you only got ONE window to browse in AND YOU LIKED IT!" :D
I personally think tabbed browsing is the best addition anybody's made to a browser in years.

OMG my Temp Internet file folder was set to 2325MB. Now THAT'S impressive!! :jester: Over 2 Gig for temp files!
Everytime you changed pages, it went thru the whole 2 gigs trying to find a match.

I only want one window at a time, no extra crap and I hate it when I have to scroll the window left/right just to read everything because someone won't fix it. :moon: :D

Anyone who does a LOT of surfing should seriously consider setting up a RAMDISK for those browser temp files. This applies to all browsers and all OS's. A plain vanilla ramdisk is easy to set up and goes like lightning! Saves wear & tear on the ole HDD as well. I use IE & Mozilla and they can both be set up to use a ramdisk.

Can you go a little further into your explanation about this? Sorry...not familiar with RAMDISK. I do quite a bit of surfing, mainly for graphics, psp tubes, etc...for websites and such. I mean ALOT.
Thx.

:D :D :D
Wouldja consider $49US a good deal?
for a ramdisk that can saves its contents automatically on Windoze shutdown?
and automatically reloads its stuff on bootup?
and saves its brains at any interval you like in between?
Have I got a deal (http://www.cenatek.com/product_ramdisk.cfm) for you! :D
Check heem out. Yous can even give it a try FREE! (For quite a while, too!)
Caveat: Ya gotta play with the options some before ya trust it. I can help & advise.
PS. I don't browse that much, but I run DF on it on my Windoze boxen. Lets the hdd shut down & cool off.
PPS. No, I don't own stock or anything. Just a product I happen to like. :p

I tried this one http://www.superspeed.com/ramdisk.html
but it locks up the computer eventually.
I like the ones that allocate ram on fly and I point it to use C:\TEMP as it's location.
if you need it to swell up to 200 megs as you mess with an archive, it does so.
When you finish it releases the memory back to the computer...
The one you pointed to, seems kinds of dangerous in that it could make the computer un-bootable if you do something wrong...
that's not nice or acceptable. :(

that's not nice or acceptable. :( I haven't seen any such problem. I have it running on my one remainng Win98 box and about 4 Win2K boxen. The worst trouble I've had is setup issues where I forgot to have it save or restore correctly. Rule #1 for ramdisks: Never put anything in a RAMDISK that you don't have backed up somewhere. :D
No lockups, no unbootables. Haven't run the WinXP version yet, but I plan to bring one online next month.
It would be nice to have one that's in- and de-flatable, for sure. This just isn't one of those. And like I said, you get a loooong free trial period to get it tuned up. I like it. YMMV.

Or you couldbe like me, I have DSL and have my cache set to 0MB in Netscape 7.0.
@IB: I use tabbed browsing all of the time, except on my 68030. i use netscape 3.0 GOLD. Works great man!

It sits on top of IE, and gives you tabs to work with. Pretty slick IMHO ;)

Nope. It literally sits on top of IE. When you open multiple tabs, you can actually see it starting up new IE processes.

Yeah, I've used Avant in the past. It's a damn site better than IE by itself, but it seemed to act a little strange sometimes...
