View Full Version : Stampede!

Well, mates - we're in for it this month.
DPC has announced a month-long 'stampede' in DF starting Jan 14th.
see this Ars post (http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/ubb.x?q=Y&a=tpc&s=50009562&f=122097561&m=6651066&p=3)
I ran a couple of web page translators over the Tweakers.net post, and it looks like DPC are doing a 5 team gauntlet.
Let's crank it up a notch!
I'm leaving on holiday on Wednesday, but the pharm is on autopilot.
willy1
I have this vision of every member of DPC crunching for a whole month and then dumping on the last day.
With any luck it will crash the DF servers and they will loose all there uploads :p

They do love their dumps. But it looks like just an extreme jump in production.

That whole increase looks to be one user MrMr ramping up to over 4M per hour.
The 'stampede' isn't scheduled to start until Jan 14th !
Fozzie
I dont think that telling them to bring it on was a particularly good idea :rotfl:
They have linked to your post in their stampede thread.
Can anyone properly translate this:
Zouden ze al tisshues nodig hebben en schone luiers ? :D

Ok Math Whizzes....don your thinking caps.
Even `IF` the managed to surpass FDCs output for any length of time..
How long would it take them to get within 500M units of FDC`s DF Team?
3B units is not an insignificant hurdle.
Why dont we have a gauntlet as well ?
How about Team Fozzie vs Team Anarchy99.

i would actually like to see the DPC take the #2 spot from ARs , hehehehehe :harhar:
Ars is doing SETI and it will end at the end of 2003, then we'll be in big trouble :looney:
willy1
01-05-2004, 07:56 PM
If they wanted to *pass* us within 30 days, they would have to out-produce us by 121M per day, or by roughly 5M points/hour (or 10M points per one Dyy stats increment).
That is a fair piece of crunching.

Ok, so if two trains leave Boston at the same time -- one going north, and one going south...oh, nevermind. :p
But, if the DPC's could produce a delta of 5 meelion per update, and maintain it for 50 days, they could make up the 3 beelion difference.
Needless to say, that's asking an awful lot. If they do it, I'll tip my virtual hat to them. That said, I have no idea how much computing power they have that they can divert to DF atm (hopefully they're not all going to pull a MrMr :scared: ). In the final analysis, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Either way, it should be fun to watch. I'll predict they'll move up a couple spots at least, with their eyes on the podium.
I feel a "mad cow disease" joke coming on... :rotfl:

if the next protein is significantly slower, i bet the DPC gauntlet participants will be surprised by their lack of output
Anteraan
01-06-2004, 01:18 AM
Absolutely true, FoBoT :harhar: -- but that can work both ways. I'm really curious to see what the new protein will be like. I guess I won't have to wait much longer, since we're due for a change on Wednesday. The new algorithm made what seemed to be a horribly slow, twisted, bear of a protein (under the old algo) into something extremely manageable. I'd love to see this algorithm get a shot at a fast, small protein -- not only for the stats (although those would be sweet), but I'm thinking we'd have a darned good shot at getting a decent RMSD out of it.

Them Cows will be lucky to average 3 to 3.5 mill per update.
There are no other big crunchers besides MrMr.
Not that I have seen yet anyway.:Pokes:
So whilst they may catch ProCooling (who roadkilled them a little while ago) and then maybe Overclockers Australia (whose rugby team got beaten recently) tehy shouldn't trouble OCWorkbench.
BTW congrats to the Cows for their first Billion. :drums:

It all depends on how many people join that stampede.
DPC certainly isn't a small team. They are probably close to the size of us (Ars).

As of the 6:00 PM EST update, 282 active out of 339 for the DPC, and 3,286,617 for the update (yea, I know it's only one and all, but...) and only 166,509 of those from MrMr. Also, they're not too far behind Ars for 2nd in the weekly, which will be the stat I enjoy watching for a while.
They're putting on a good show so far. I think this is going to be fun to watch.

2nd place in dailies and almost 2nd in the weekly too, another day and they will have that one for sure.
Whilst watching DPC demolish those teams down in 4th and 5th I think we should also see a possible threat here. Not from DPC, well not yet anyway but if Ars actually got their arse into gear with real purpose they could do a similar job on us.
Sure we have a 600 million lead but if Ars hit 85% activity like DPC have then we would be seriously out produced.
Remember a lot of our hourly is provided by Beth who may have to shut down soon due to the sprogs goig back to school/college/whatever.
Take out 1 million and hour of ours and double Ars's and see what we would get in a month or so.
Hey what a doom merchant I am.:p

11 million on this update.
17 million more than Free DC on last day's update.
Only 35 mill less than us on the week.
Got to say impressive stuff form the Cows.
Loks like procooling will fall in a couple of days
Overclockers Oz may take 10 days.
OCWorkbench could be accessible within the timeframe of the stampede.

I don't want to say that out loud, but within some time we will lose our #1-spot on DF Or did this stampede-thing already begin?
The gauntlet has not officially started yet, but we are in the up of the gauntlet arc (as I see things). This arc goes as follows:
1. A week or so before the guntlet people start switching over when comfortable or they can (i.e. tight race in another project)
2. 12-48 hours beforehand all of the home pharms are switched over to DF, allowing time to fix any errors (firewall issues, RAM, etc.)
3. After the start of the gauntlet, people will borg like crazy for the next few days, slowly bringing the graph to level.
4. when the gauntlet is around 75% done, one of two things happen:
a. The subteam's lead is secure, firepower is slowly brought off of the project
b. The subteam's lead is not secure, or the subteam has a chance to pass causing:
i. Mad overclocks on machines
ii. a number of subteams members for only a week (a prolonged spike)
iii. people borging computers that may not have been worth it before
5. After the conclusion of the gauntlet, during the next week, much of the power is brought off of DF (or whatever project it is on), and returned to its home project. At the same time, some extra power stays (this is more true for larger teams, i.e. Ars, DPC, Anand)
So we are inbetween 1 and 2, moving toward 2 rather quickly.
And, if they threaten us too badly, I have 4-5Ghz I can pull to DF.
