Welcome Splinkio! Great to have you aboard.
Would that be a 386 sx25 or a 486 sx25 :p
Welcome aboard

I don't know for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if the client won't run on either a 386 or 486... I think the minimum is PPro on Windows, and P-1 on *nix (or something like that -- maybe it's up to a PPro on *nix now too).
But anyway, welcome! :|party|:

Heh,
Oooooo the sx-25 .. those were the days .. I remember when I had a dx2-66 laptop for about 6 billion pounds too :)
I am running a Quad Xeon 2.8 on A Supermicro Board with 4 gb of interleaved memory. Also got a 3.2 p4 clocked at 3.4 doing some work too, and various other machines around the house .. a p3 1 ghz laptop :)
Thanks for welcoming me guys

Glad to have you Splinkio. Your list o' boxen is impressive, and we welcome you. I'm fairly new here myself, but I think you'll find this a good group of people. Actually, I think most of us are nuts, but we're nicely mixed nuts. :D
Glad to have you aboard!

Nice 1 Gopher for getting the welcome in, I must be slipping.
Hope you have your clients optimised Splinkio?!
If you have any questions let us know.

Erm I dont think I have :)
Ill tell you what I have done:
Downloaded the client, running with 150 meg memory, no editing of any ini file, or any txt file, just everything default. I assume this is not the most efficient way to do it :)
Looking at some of the outputs, some people are doing a million plus a day, I think I am only managing about 200,000 a day, so im doing something wrong somewhere :)
If there is anyone who can help me getting those numbers up then that would be most appreciated.
Now I am going to put in some silly faces to make this message look funky..

Hey, you just don't have as much firepower as some people. If I were to switch everything onto DF, I would get around 120,000 a day, tops.
Don't feel bad, and find more computers......:Pokes:

With that kind of firepower he should be able to do more than 200,000 a day...
I have a XP 1800 and somertimes a PIV 2.66Ghz running. If both are running I can do 120,000 a day or even more..
So Splinko , are you using the text client? I guess so, but are you running it in quiet mode? try it... It improves performance quite a bit....it is the -qt switch I think, but you could also use dfgui (http://gilchrist.ca/jeff/dfGUI/) to add the switches and to monitor the client...there is also another program out to monitor different clients from a different machine but I forgot what it is called:blush:
And don't forget that you have do to 4 installs of the client on that 4way Xeon..
Otherwise it will only use 1 cpu.
Oh, and I forgot: WELCOME aboard  :|party|: :elephant: :drums:

Thanks for that info.
Yer I am running 4 clients on the Xeon machine and they are running as fast as I can expect them to.
I will try quiet mode and see if that makes any difference, and I am running the text client also. I can try running on a few other machines at work - we have a few server farms at work mainly compromising of 60+ HP Prolient DL 580 with 4 2.4 xeons and 2 gb memory, so I imagine they will be able to bump out some power - however, i dont wanna interrupt the performance of those machines really.
I got a few other machines at home which I could run the client on (will take it up to about 10 instances of the client running) so ill see if that bumps up the performance.

The biggest difference in performance is adding the -rt switch which uses extra RAM.
so you should have -rt -qt as your switches in your foldit.bat file.
DF can run as a service if you are running M$ OSes.
This requires a one off command line of foldtrajlite /install and install1, install2, install3 for further instances.
they read from a newly created service.cfg file which you will need to add
useram=1 to so that it uses extra RAM.
I don't know about issues with multiple service installs as I haven't any quad boixen.

Okidockey,
Well hopefully when I get home i can try it. Ill try and see if i can get it on a few servers here to benchmark it against mine at home.
Thanks for all your help again guys - guess I'll have to go out and purchase a few machines and install linux on there see if that runs any faster.
I am sure i will be able to pick a few 2ghz boxes up for a few hundred pounds - ebay here we come :)
Will be interesting to see though - my xeons being oem and the HP boxes here being HP xeons - im guessing that the 2.4 HP xeon will out perform a 2.8 oem one ...
well .. we will wait and see an dill post the results if you guys really wanna know :)

Well I think I got things kinda sorted. I did a little calculation based on my performance overnight, and it looks like ill be hitting 1.7 million (hopefully) by about monday morning at 06:00.
Thanks for all your help guys.

Ok so i lied.
Im doing a little bit better than i expected. I had to let 2 of my xeons go though, as I need the money to buy a house at the end of the year, so i sold those and my quad board so i am running on less power at home now - down to about 7 processors in all :(
