It is now an option to download Chatzilla (hmmmmmm, just like Mozilla, ya wonder? :o ) with the newest release of 7.1
That makes irc.hashmark.net all of a control+6 away!
Cool!

Why would anybody use Netscape instead of Mozilla or Firebird?

Because I'm lazy, and it sets up my netscape mail for me (darned DSL only gets the 5 family members 3 e-mail accounts, so I'm stuck with a free one)

Come onnow, a lot of websites today refuse to run under Netscape/Mozilla.
Sucks, but I use IE at times *cringe*
Damn bastards removed what was one of the best browsers in the world, now I use use AvantBrowser for most things, don't need a browser to take up 35+MB of RAM.

EDIT: At the moment, Netscape/Moz (same damn thing) is taking up 56,032 Kb or memory
Freakin unacceptable!

I must say that I very seldom see a website that doesn't work in Mozilla and if it occurs, I send them an email explaining the problem. I'm amazed that some webdesigners/webdevelopers still makes sites that's only been tested in IE.
What was one of the best browsers in the world?
Since you use AvantBrowser, it sound to me like you're mostly using IE ;)
It has one interesting feature - the ability to block flash. How is that working? Can you block on a per site/server basis?

Freakin unacceptable! I don't think it's much worse than IE...If you want a lightweight browser, I suggest checking out Opera. It's quite good in the latest versions.
Personally I stick to Mozilla Firebird. If you just want a browser, I recommend that instead of the full Mozilla suite.

Well, on most sites, I have the whole set of things blocked; pictures, ActiveX, Java, and Flash. It helps them load a lot faster. The lists also work well, and I don't have a problem with loading anything, even if it is on my block list. A simple right-click, select the option away.
On Netscape/Moz some things that don't often work are timers and the like, and occaionally whole websites, It is not as bad as it used to be, but bad enough to force me to use Avant/IE (I sure as hell think they are related) at times.
As for memory usage, with a similar number of tabs open (5) to the same sites, it uses 23,053 Kb of memory. It is a much smaller browser. I think that has more to do with the fact that it is not open source, and with dewer people working on it, and less chance for someone to start making code redundant and bloated, it keeps the program smaller.

The ability to block anything, especially flash, is something I would like to be able to in Firebird. There already is a solution, but it just hides them, it still downloads then :(
Timers?
I don't know what part of Mozilla that takes up most of the memory, but I guess part of it is the fact that mozilla is cross platform.
I just tried loading arstechnica.com in mozilla 1.6 and IE6. They both used between 24-25MB mem.
I don't buy your argument in regards to closed source vs open source. The goals of Mozilla was/is very different from IE., so you can't really compare them. A much better comparison would be KDE's Konquorer. Just check out Apple's Safari browser which is based on KHTML (KDE's html engine). It's small, fast and efficient.
One thing is for sure, IE is seriously broken! Two of the most critical problems is probably that it's "box model" fubar and that it doesn't fully support .png.
