Currently the people doing RC5 are me Guru, DP, PY 222, TheOtherPhil, and our lord IB, rabidguymonkey, and JT.

I wanna race anyone who is interested!

No holds barred, running for from the 7th of March till the end!

FYI

I am running RC5-72 as part of no team.
When I tried to join Free-DC team I got an error on the
web page. I looked a the bug report page and found a long
list of bugs having to do with the present stats. I'm not much
on bugs but it looked like they didn't expect it to be fixed
until sometime in the future.

I would be glad to join if someone can figure out how.

We're pretty much at a point in this project that if we don't get more firepower we will stall out in the rank climb where we are at. MrTRS, you shouldn't have any problems joining the team assuming you know your e-mail addy and password.

@magnav0x: I have too little power, adn I end up cycling through 8 or 9 projects with my 4 switchable computers. And I thought was a good amount of time for a gauntlet. I seen a few that were two weeks, and a lot that were for a month, so I picked the middle.

I'm still trying to determine the purpose of this project, beyond solving the key. Questions like:
- does it push more business towards the private company RSAsecurity.com?
- does solving it just tell the US Govt to use more bits in their DES encryption?
- is it a good idea to work w/distributed.net and united devices since they appear to be private corps?

Do I put Bonks ip numbers in the place where it says

And then change where it says "Automatically select a distributed.net keyserver?"

You can change the dnetc.ini file or via the config

change the "automatically select a distributed.net keyserver" to no, then it will show 2 more options where you can specify an ip (or DNS name) and a port

put in the ip address, leave the port empty

As long as you have the 'disable fallback to a distributed.net keyserver" set to No then if my proxy was down it will bypass it.

unforuntately I didn't write these stats :( But let me see what I can do. Can you IM me with your IP address. It holds them and I think it goes off a reverse DNS lookup and your's is probably .com. (which it defaults as US commercial). I can probably alter the table and make it UK once I know which one.

Guzzler versus the world gauntlet:

Guzzler was controlling the DF world. A top-notch team of specialists was needed to take him down. He proclaimed that no one could beat him, then proceeded to ramp up his firepower more. The alliance between 13 Team Stir Fry members fought for the world, desperate at times, running large amounts of DF machines no-netting, using up enough CD-R's to fill a small landfill. WE beat hime back with less than two hours remaining in the month long gauntlet.

I wouldn't even bow to JoeProCooling, or the Ministry of Serendipity.

All I can say is:

Well, I found out that two machines were not dumping afterevery work unit.

One of them would dump every 24, and one would dump every 127 (??)

I havn't fixed them, but I will dump them. :)

Well, I don't see how I can claim anything. Besides I'm confused
about how in the Gauntlet stats, the total can be less than lastweek?

Didn't Guru say something about 9 high end pc's for the weekend.

Well, I have :dump: my problemed box. It seems to not like option 3 for buffer-check (connect after every block).

It's flushing whenever I get to it, it has a buffer of 127 workunits, and it's a PIII 600. Does 23 blocks a day....

Turned DF off of the other two machines (it was doing 50/50 on my part time AXP 2000+ and Pentium M 1.3Ghz). Gonna see how that pushes production. Just gotta take back my 6th place.

Finally, I have to turn on the VIA C3 1.shit GHZ computer. Does about 875,000 keys a second.

Have 7 blocks done between the 4 P75 laptops. Have another 5 done on my P120.

MrTRS must use glasses to see IB... doing a stable job at the moment but in future his second rank might be unsafe after Beyond wake up

guru tries to follow up to MrTRS... but therefore he must have more machines because he dumped justed the weekend machines :D

Beyond is leading the midrange now! :scared: I'm sure I can get the leading back if he is in the toprange of the gauntlet :moon:

THE-MK is thinking that PY 222 might be dangerous in the near future. He could claim the leading of the midrange :swear:

Do the bootable floppy borg!!!!!!

I have gotten close to 450 work units from it in the past.

All you have to do is a get on a win95 or win98 machine, and format a floppy with the "system disk" option checked.

You then put the DOS version of the DNET client on the floppy. This fits with a good 100k to spare. You then put a in-buffer (800-1000unit range) in the folder, copy you dnetc.ini file in and poof! instant borg disk.

Use it over a weekend. After your co-workers leave, put this in their computers, reboot, and type dnetc. Repeat.

Come in early monday morning, and reboot the machines again, removing the floppies. Then copy the buff-out files to your main machine and upload them.

Fairly simple, and I use it on 8 older laptops currently. makes borging easier!


On another note: I hate you all. You all have more boxen than me. My little savings account can't handle many more withdrawls before I run out. Newegg owns my ass. But I'm still going to try for one more!

I'd watch out if it is a linux machine.

If the terminal window just gets shut down, the client runs, but may not be submitting work units.

The logs dissipear for the client, but it still sucks up computer time.

I had 3 instances running on this box, and if what I think was happening was happenning, I should have 3,000,000k/sec more, just because the computers were being stupid.....

If I can find the culprit, that should help me out a little bit as well....


I am going to be using one of my floppy borgs on the VIA C3 board, and see if I got an improvement on it.

I remember an improvement in times on a couple of other computer by 10%. Not having to deal with thread, OS background stuff, etc.

I turn off my computers on Tuesdays because I'm lucky enough to have a house cleaner
come on Tuesdays. When she first started I didn't tell her any thing special about the
room full of computers. So after she left that first Tuesday I found a couple boxes not
running the clients that should have been running. I think she dusted the keyboards
and hit the wrong keys by accident. And I have a couple MB running with no cases.

So to avoid any unexpected shocks on her part, I take that time to turn everything off
and do maintaince. I don't always restart them asap.

Plus this last Wednsday I had a DSL outage. The first time since I have had the service.
So rather than spend all afternoon calling the DSL people and messing with my network,
I just turned everthing off over night. Everything was fine the next morning.

I don't have any Borged. Not because I have any thing against doing that but I don't
have the opportunity because I don't work around any computers.

The gauntlet is in heavy danger! DFs proteinchange is coming soon and a fast protein is predicted. There is also the threat of the cows... So in the future a lot of people will change back to DF :(

I kinda like this idea as a concept. I would really like it if we all could do it.
I think it would be unfair to the people that switched to DF for some of us
to continue with the gauntlet while they were gone.

Maybe we could do the switch as a group and come back like IronBits says.

I'm staying for many reasons. First a race is a race, no stopping to smell the roses. They don't call time out on a nascar race to go race indy cars. Second, DF is much harder to setup and maintain on non-networked systems then rc5. Third, I'm ony going until the end of the month. After that I have to shut down my systems due to summer cooling, high power bills, and to have my next lan party. :|party|:

If everyone else want's to abandan the gauntlet that's fine, just let me know. I'll be here until Apr 1. :cheers:

So... we have a new fast protein in the land of distributed computing, and many of us changed over to distributed folding (including me :spank: )

IronBits dropped his production massive. His output is about 5% of one of his good days on the gauntlet.

Guru is still producing since ever. He decided to stay at the gauntlet :thumbs:

MrTRS dropped to about 70% and did a massive dump on DF...

It seems that Beyond stopped his d.net-production for the new fast and server killing protein :D and so did willy1

THE-MK is flushing the rest of WUs on his clients and changes over to DF... he has to defend some ranks! :fight:

PY 222 stays loyal at the gauntlet... like guru... like TheOtherPhil... like JTrinkle...

I'm unsure about magicfan241... did he completly changed to DF or only some 'puters?

Edo Rajh... what about him? Sometimes dumping some WUs...

Last days production dropped from about 9,500 WUs to 2,000... it's the DF fever :D

I've got a few things here (the ones where they are services, and I'm too lazy to change them). I've got my 7 lpatops still crunching (watch my uber-l33t 35 work unit dump from them sometime around the end of the gauntlet)

I've got an idea for "THE SUMMER GAUNTLET" encompasing 90 days, 9 legs, 2 subteams, which would make:

9 projects (legs)--

DF
D.NET (RC572)
D.NET (OGR)
F@H
D2OL
DPAD
LifeMapper
DHEP
EON

2 Teams--
Team Empire (UK)
Team Colonial (US)

There would be winners--
1 overall for all projects
1 individual for each project
1 subteam for each project
1 overall subteam award
1 subteam award for each project

It would be points based:
the top person for each project gets "n" points, where "n" equals the number of participants in the projects, and each person under him gets one less point for each rank below hime. So a person who can come in 2nd place for every contest may win, while the person who comes in 1st for all but 2 or 3 may not win, because he got less points (I'm inspired by the points system in NASCAR)


Starting in the beginning of June, and ending 90 days later (should be around the end of August).

I was thinking about doing 12 weeks/12 projects, but 7 days a project is really rigorous.

This would not be for the feint of heart. The would be the "Free-DC nine-atholon". I'm even thinking of making an honest-to-god trophy for the overall winner.

Whoever did the stats for this would be doing a pile of stats.

I'll refine the idea, and start a discussion thread about it.

I think your statment about somebody working hard

Maybe you could do a trophy for the sats guy as well.

on the trophy

How about doing this different projects? The 90 days with the projects I like on my few computers I have? Or from day 1 to day 10 project number 1, from day 11 to day 20 project number 2, ...?

I turned my dataspider of, because of the stats-outage at distributed.net... I hope you can forgive me :D

When will the official stats return? I know that they get a dua opteron as a new stats-box and they install FreeBSD and PostgreSQL on it... That's the last message from March 26th (or 25th, whatever timezone you are :D)

I have joined the Free-DC RC5-72 team. :D

I'm just not sure if joining the team worked, because the stats machine went down the same day I joined. We'll see if I show up on the team when the stats come back. If I'm not on the team, then I will join (again).

Btw, I think IB came back because he's worried about me 'debuting' as #1 when the stats return. I should be #2 or #3 right now, and #1 is inevitable...It's just a matter of time! :smoking:
