Linux Red Hat 9 or Mandrake 9.1 crash during the install.

XP and Win2k both BSOD.

Dunno what to do?

The tyan's are fussy about memory.
Try installing with only one sim and see if the crashing stops.

If you use 2 or more slots the memory really needs to be registered.
I am using 4 of those boards and I know what you are going through.

Also, ensure your heat sink(s) are good enough to cool the thing.

vCore temps should be checked.

are ECC registered.

I'll pop the heatsinks off and reapply some thermal compound.

I'll try with one DIMM

Tried both ideas, I'm just getting nowhere.

The Tiger MP doesn't have a 12volt auxillary plug so all the power for the CPU's is taken from the 5volt supply on the ATX connector.

Is your PSU strong enough on the 5volt rail.
Are the red wires getting warm ?

Also I remember having a problem installing an OS on one of my tigers which had an old bios.

Bios should be v1.5, if it is older that will cause trouble.

IF I remember correctly, go into the BIOS, find the spot where it asks for 'os type' or something (just woke up), it should be defaulted at 1.4, change it to MPS 1.1, save and reboot.

I can't really help here has I've never used a Tyan. Have you considered the possiblity of a BIOS issue (bad BIOS)?

It is the latest BIOS and I tried the MP 1.1 setting.

Guess I'm stuffed.

PCZ , do you want me to send it on back?

Fozzie hmm okay what size of HD, does the BIOS recognise the whole of the CD,
maybe one of your Processor has gone? maybe something else is bad... check everything and then drop kick it all the way back to PCZ :)

Fozzie

Is your HD larger than 137gb ?
Tiger MP's don't have 48bit LBA.

If you have a smaller HD available give it a try before shipping the board back.

I get kmode exception errors when trying to install Win2k.

Linux installer just stalls.

I've tried the 1 DIMM only in each of the slots i turn which made no difference.

PM me your address and I'll get it on back to you.

I think I may take a break as the last week has been very frustrating and I've been a bit of a bastard to live with.

Wife and I had a bit of a "disagreement" so I need to chill with something far less stressful.

Cheers for all your help and advice guys.

Sorry you couldn't get the board working.

That is one I bought of ebay some time ago but I never actually used it.
It certainly had been in use at some time though as the board was quite dusty.

No need to waste money posting it back to me
keep it, give it away, or smash it with a hammer, your call !

As for getting grumpy when computers play you up, been there done that.

Chill for a few days.
