but, somehow, while in GNOME, I did, without any clicking/keyboard combos out of the ordinary (only ctrl+F3) it logged me out, and set it into to text mode.
Anyone know if it is a glitch, or if there is a combo I shoiuld watch out for.
So far my linux machine is on par with my win98 machine for reboots due to errors (once every 30 days)

You sure you didn't snag the ALT key as well? The CTRL+ALT+F3 would have thrown you to a new terminal session, which would have been at a login prompt in text mode.
In such a case, CTRL+ALT+F7 would have put you back in your X-session.
Just a guess.....
CTRL-ALT-BKSPACE puts you into init 3 (textmode)
Try
startx
or xinit
perhaps

I think I must have added the alt in my keyboard combo, it was while I was using ctrl+F4 that it happened.
I wrote down how to fix it on a little notecard and taped it to my monitor. I only have about 20 little notcards on there to tell me important info and how to do things
