When I'm logged in I see the threads with new messages unread by me (special icon). A certain period after I have visited that thread the icon changes (so I know there are no new messages).

I just wonder how long it takes. Other forums I visit change the icon right after I have opened the read; as soon as I go back the icon is changed.

In this forum it seems to take several minutes until there is an actual change.

Is that intended?

Cookies is what you are referring to, and I think they get changed after 15 minutes, but that's just a guess on my part.

Well, the cookie should be the thing that tells the forum who I am. It should not store what threads I have read. That information should only be stored on the server ?!?
