View Full Version : Free-DC Stats & The Future

My schedule has changed some recently and I've found a couple of hours a night to dedicate to one of my own programming projects. After some consideration, I think I've decided that my next generation stats stuff will probably be the project that gets that time.

However, after looking about a bit, it's obvious that you guys haven been quite busy in my absence. http://stats.free-dc.org and http://stats.open-dc.org both look really good!

It seems foolish for me to replicate stuff that's already been done, so now I'm thinking about ways to complement the stuff that's being created by our other stats guys. Unfortunately, there's quite a bit going on here and I'm not quite sure where to start (or even who's doing what, exactly).

It seems to me that IB's stuff at stats.free-dc.org and Bok's stuff at stats.open-dc.org should probably be merged somehow, but I don't know how feasible that would be. Ideally, everything stats related for Free-DC should be available from a single URL (http://stats.free-dc.org) and present a unified look that will be easily tied in to the home page navigation. Maybe my participation shouldn't be in writing the stats stuff (as you guys seem to have that well covered), but rather in creating a unified interface to the stuff everyone else is doing.

Of course, I'm not trying to push anyone into anything or horn in on someone else's project. I could just as easily continue on with the next-gen stats stuff I've already started. I'm just trying to find the most effective way for me to contribute to our little community and if it's doing something other than writing a stats engine from scratch, that's fine with me.

So, does anybody want to get me up to speed on what's going on and what I should be doing?

Read your mail for starters :p :D

Just kidding. Bok is doing all of the stats stuff for Free-DC, and stats.free-dc.org is actually located on Bok's Server, so...
Joining both places is on the to-do list and is an excellent idea.
Bok and I were looking for trick things to do, like mouseOvers to highlight an entire row to make it easier to read across...
Then we came up with the idea to have sorting columns, and the search was on.
I found this nifty javaScript thing, didn't quite do what we needed.
We got lucky and found MerePeer who is learned in the ways of the java spirits, beat it up, ripped at the .js stuff until it begged for mercy and began doing what Bok and I wanted.
So we have those 'trick' items working, but not implimented 'site wide' yet.

Bok's been busy on the 'metrics' and other MySQL magic in the background, while I hunt down bugs and make recommendations on how to change the .css and we got the <include>header.html thing working. ;)

We can really use your help getting everything organized, implemented, merged and
other such stuff you can do in your :sleepy: .

Please contact Bok directly ASAP :smoking:

I know Bok would welcome a big hand in the HTML and .CSS stuff as well...

I'm sure he will welcome you with open arms.

Thanks Dyyryath! :notworthy

Other major projects
Full integration of the Super Computer Database and
Rank Panel to be expanded to include tracking of teams behind us or ahead of us
with potential predictions, maybe colored for threat levels (Jeff had something like that awhile back)
the more information/stats we can gather and produce, the merrier the Free-DC family will be

Would be nice if we could get some folks willing to do NEWS posting on the front page :help:

Bok also has a Gauntlet page you may not know about
http://stats.open-dc.org/gauntlet/

The demo page for the sorting columns is here
http://www.dbestern.com/Sort
There is a newer version hot off the press from MerePeer, but I haven't had a
chance to look it over...

Code will be on the Server stats.free-dc.org/sort pretty soon. ;)
