Looks like I messed up the X config and it won't boot into the Gnome GUI. I think I selected the wrong card. I went for a 9000 pro when I have a 9200SE in there.

Can I change this config easily?

Sure. Once it's finished booting, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (will take you to tty1). Login as root, then run xf86config again.

Or, if you know the card's information, edit /etc/XF86Config-4 (IIRC) and punch in the information.

Once you've finished that, restart X, or reboot. If it doesn't work, repeat above till you find the right one :)

Do I type XF86config to run it?

How do I restart X?

Step by step for the Linux dunce please

Yeah, type xf86config (as shown) and it will allow you to re-configure X.

I'm not very familiar with RedHat, but something along the lines of

/etc/init.d/xdm (or kdm or gdm) restart

should restart X windows for you.

erm, you may not get X86Config in RH9. I don't quite remember, but I don't have it on this workstation I'm typing on now.

Didn't they change it to redhat-config-xfree86 or something.

Anyway, once you have reconfigured it, then

startx

should try and start it also

I've never actually used redhat, so I couldn't say for certain... Damned vendors always trying to change things from their defaults...

I just confirmed, under WhiteBox linux (which is redhat enterprise 3 recompiled), the command is

redhat-config-xfree86

and then pick the Advanced tab, etc.

yeah that was one thing i didnt like about redhat when i tried it. it was redhat-config-blahblah which is fine, makes it easy to find a lot of useful configs, except.... they are all X programs, which was really annoying because this was a server on which I didn't want X. oh well, that was a while ago, anyway :)
