I have this old laptop....25mhz processor and im not sure but most likely 286....it only has 4mb of ram and I can't get it to run anything but DOS and win95. And md5crk crashes right as its finishing testing cores and generating start points (an hour and 15 minutes after you start it). Does anyone know of a minimalist operating system that i can install that could possibly run md5crk? or is it even possible on a 286? I have tried freebsd, debian, zipslack, mulinux. All of the linux ones die while trying to make ramdisk i think, even tho they only require 4mb of ram. And the rest just either reboot during boot or freeze.

There's several "mini" linux distro's out there that I have attempted to use in the past, unfortunately I can't recall the names of any!

Well, the point wasn't really to have it help me....I just really wanted to have some sort of use for this over-sized, sad excuse for a paper-weight.

Might try -

Damn Small - http://www.distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=damnsmall

SLAX - http://www.distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=slax

ByzantineOS - http://byzgl.sourceforge.net/

These are all minimal distros that can be put on a mini CD and can be run live (DSL and Byz..not sure about SLAX).

Is it even compatible with the x86 code.
it's only 8bit or not.

You could try the smallest win95 it's about 1,4x MB :D

You guys do know that a 25Mhz processor is a 486 (no DX2).

It should be nice and 32bit and fine to run the code (provided there is no MMX or anything)

You could try "Core Linux": http://coredistro.sourceforge.net/

Dunno anything about it.

Because it is running at 25mhz doesn't automatically mean it is a 486.
It could be a 386dx, 386sx, 486sx, 486dx, even a 286 running at 25mhz.

What model is the laptop ?
