Only way to correct this wipe the directory clean and start with a fresh install?

Yep, after installing new RAM. ;)

It's annoying when that happens.

Deleting filelist.txt will get the client going again but it will restart at gen 0.

If the PC is overclocked then a possible fix is to reduce the FSB and use slower RAM Timings.

The DF client will self destruct even on the most reliable boxes, so as long as it doesn't happen frequently don't panic !
