I'm just building a Kernel 2.6.9 for this machine and was wondering if it is possible to tune the kernel to SoB in some way (also including factoring and sieving).
I myself have not seen any noticeable speed improvement with diffrent kernel builds, but was wondering if anyone else had experiences/tips for optimizing the kernel for SOB.

Is there any modules that when not build into the kernel could speed SoB up?
Or is there any modules that when build into the kernel (or loaded) speed up SoB?

AFAIK, there were some discussions about this topic (special Linux for GIMPS) over at the mersenneforum (http://www.mersenneforum.org/) .
According to my knowledge, there is no real way to speedup crunching performance.

Maybe the kernel 2.4 is better suited for a machine that only has the task to crunch, as the O(1) scheduler can't play out its advantages then etc.

Just found this one:

Kernel 2.6.x can modulate the speed of the mobile CPUs. It is really usefull for laptops (battery saving and temperature saving).
For example, my laptop Athlon-M 1400+ at 1200 MHz is shutting down when I run SOB (CPU too hot !). When I downclock it to 900MHz, it can crunch for weeks :)

Another thing, when you use your computer *not* only for crunching, kernel 2.6.x is doing a better multitasking (+20% performance on a webserver). It allows more clock for SOB ;)
