My father passed away

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

There's always an upside to things when a downside is all one can usually say.

My mom always uses the following phrase, I don't know if it applies to this situation, but it still puts life into a somewhat happier perspective in my mind:

When you are born, God makes you cute, innocent, and helpless. This makes everyone around you want to protect you, nuture you, love you, and help you grow.

When you get old, God makes you brittle and bitter. That way, when you pass, it is easier on the heart to watch them go.

Just remember, your eyes may be filled with tears of saddness because of your loss, but there is someone out there holding their newborn baby with tears of happiness.

My grandfather died of cancer when I was 4. He didn't know my mother was pregnant with a third grandchild. He would have tried to have held on and suffered longer if he knew. When my brother was born, the first thing I told my mother when I saw him was, "Mommy, that isn't Justin, that's Pa-paw." I still believe my grandfather's soul is the same as my younger brother's. Just wait, your grandfather will be back in another child's spirit to bring happiness to the world again.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. It's just such a shock. He was only 60 and pretty fit apart from the leukemia, which last week was in total remission. The chemo though caused some problems and on wednesday morning he had a massive heart attack whilst sleeping.

I've managed to get a flight from DC to London tonight so I'm about to leave to drive up there.

I might get on briefly before I return next friday.

Until then, let's get that gap to Ars cut down in D2OL...

Again, thank you all. Been about the hardest week of my life by far. Back in the US now, not sure reality has kicked in yet as I've just mainly tried to be there for my mother.... but life DOES go on.
