Hi to all,

I just installed FAD on two computers, and yes, I stopped running SOB, and I have some doubts.
I downloaded for each computer more than 20 wu's to process but I don't understand one thing.
1º - How do I know that the client will cache more work after crunching those 20?
2º - Do I have to manually download the wu's?
3º - How often is the stats page updated?
4º - Is it a a good idea to install FAD on an Intel 400Mhz?

Thanks in advance,

Carlos

Carlos,

If you have a constant internet connection, open the FaD control panel. You'll see a tab labeled GENERAL. Under that tab will be a drop down box labeled Internet Connection Plan. Change the option to "Selecting all jobs". This will upload and download new WUs automatically so long as you are connected to the internet constantly. If not, then you'll have to change the Internet Connection Plan to Manual.

The stats page is updated roughly 4 times per day (every 6 hours or so). This is not enough for some stat-junkies, but it's the best they offer.

To simulate a feeling like you're seeing more stats, check the FaD website and Bok's stats. It kinda cures my need to see my WUs post. :p

Is it a good idea to install FaD on an Intel 400MHz????

I HAVE NO IDEA! ASK FOZTRADAMUS!

Jeff,

I don't have a constant internet connection. It goes down every 100 hours but I have a program that re-dials automatically the connection. What I wanted is exactly what you said and I was not sure about "Selecting all jobs" option.

I'm a stats fanatic!

Thanks for wasting time with my questions.

I always get strange errors when running new projects. Let's see what happens with FAD.

I ran FaD on a P3 450 for a while. Had no problems but it didn't really churn out many points (as expected). I found that that box was more productive on another project.

However, this was many moons ago.

I would call that an constant internet connection :) Mine (DSL) is closed 8 hours after I activate the line not matter if I'm active or not but my router is reconnecting me as soon as a program needs the net.

Don't really worry about the WUs. In the worst case (you get an empty buffer) the client just generates another workunit. I've never checked but you should get full credit for such units unless you send them in after the query-closing date that usually is far in the future.

I now recommend "When online" instead of "Selecting all jobs." They work the same except that if one uses "When online" and there is no internet connection available (BellSouth :)), then the Find-a-Drug program can "Add" jobs and keep crunching. It uses molecules from the cache folder to keep going, and, yes, these are valid jobs.

My ISP let me down for a total of 12 days last year. I lost some crunching time due to using "Selecting all jobs."

Didn't know the client could manafacture its own jobs.
Is there a limit to this, this could be good for the offliners.

Any idea when the FAD forum is coming back online ?

The FaD forum has been back up for more that 24 hours.

http://www.find-a-drug.org.uk was borked yesterday and that may have led to some of the cgi errors. The list of servers is in cgi.lis

No, it isn't good news for the offliners because the online machine can only import results for jobs which were exported. THINK thinks. :D

The Forum isn't working for me.

http://forum.find-a-drug.org.uk
it is not resolving in DNS

Perhaps you have a different url ?

That link works for me.

When that happens, one can sometimes get on by going to a post such as this one: http://forum.find-a-drug.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=4440 .

Does that work? Sometimes one can Run > ipconfig /flshdns and it helps. Otherwise your ISP hasn't picked up the redirects from yesterday.
