I have some codecs but I cannot play a movie file, it just gives me errors and locks up Windows.
I'll proably get told that everything works fine on Linux, and yes I probably should try it again sometime.
Anyone suggest a good codec to play AVIs
First get GSpot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) it helps you to identify which codec is acutally needed and if the file is eventually damaged.
It is a really helpful tool!
Then try to find a fitting codec.. Try a search for Nimo's codec pach. they generally pack all kinds off codecs together...
I usually install everything seperatly like divx, xvid, and one I just can't remember and thats al I usually need...
maybe it helps...

Check here:

Codecs
3ivX D4 4.5 (http://www.3ivx.com/download/index.html) - free MPEG-4 codec including AAC encoder, MP4 multiplexer and MP4/AAC playback filters for any media player. Website (http://www.3ivx.com/)
DivX 3.11 alpha (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Codecs/divx_311alpha.exe) - it appears to me that some people don't know what CTRL-F is... so learn!!!
DivX 5.2.1 (http://www.divx.com/divx/download/) - lastest DivX codec by DivXNetworks. The successor of DivX4.
DivX 5.2.1 Pro (http://www.divx.com/divx/divxpro/download/) - free version with extra features. Trial version - runs out after 6 month.
Huffyuv 2.1 (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Codecs/huffyuv_ccesp-patch_025.zip)- lossless codec, suited for capturing video
XviD 1.0.3 (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Codecs/XviD-1.0.3-20122004.exe) - imho the best MPEG-4 codec out there.
