Thanks to Jeff of XtremeSystems for doing the mobo mod and uwire mod on the cpu sockets.

Finally got some time to install it today. Running Gentoo showing 4 procs (It's HT too) at 15x200 = dual 3Ghz :)

Let's see what it does on D2OL for now.

I've got 2 more sets, 3 more coming and perhaps another set from IB. I might need to release some other stuff in the near future to make room.....

Ive been running one a few weeks on D2OL now.
I get around 280 - 300 a day.
I would love to build more but cant afford it right now. The one I put together was a replacement for my wifes dual 2400mp so I couldnt skimp on the power supply and such.

That's why I have to watch you close behind me :p

Using the 1.6lv Xeons for $100 per pair ?

I got a very decent Sparkle power supply for this one...

My Dual Xeons are jealous. They are just sitting in a box above my computer. They wanna be built into a system too!

Too bad my money situation recently turned for the worse and I had to lend my g/f $500 that was SUPPOSED to goto building that computer. Once she pays me back my beast shall live!!!

any chance u can post some pictures of your U-wire mod?

I want a few more to look at before I attempt to solder. I actually plan on loading up the web page in my step-dad's Stained Glass Workshop and having him perform the soldering since he does that so much w/ stained glass.

The pictures at Jeff's tutorial are probably the best...but there is no soldering required for the u-wire piece just the mobo mod

here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=50314)

Jeff, I did the soldering on mine and was disapointed. I could get 16X204 before the mod. Do the U wire, see where your at, if you can get 3.0 - 3.2 GHz dont waste your time with the ram voltage mod. The only advantage I got from it was a faster FSB with a 15X multiplier, still capped out around 3.2GHz.
I agree with Bok Jeffs guide is about the best site I could find:thumbs:
Nice job Jeff.

EM,

that's very interesting. I take it you are using an Asus PC-DL mobo too?

If you don't need the mobo mod to 'just' get to 3Ghz then it makes the whole process a lot easier. I've just paid for my additional 3 sets now too.

MeerPeer, if you are reading this and still want to try it, then the xeons are still available for you :)

I am thinking about getting one of the ASUS mobo's. They are PC3200 RAM, the crucial website says CL3. is anyone using CL2?????? if so what make??

Cheers

Bok

Mine is CL2.5 I think, Kingston. I'll check to make sure tonight.

If you buy one and can't get hold on any xeons let me know and I'll hook you up with a pair..

may be able to get these --- 1800DP/512L2/400/1.5V SL5Z8 3212A419-1132 -- what do you think. Should be about £75. or should i look for 1Mb L2?

Bok
02-28-2005, 02:49 PM
Those are 603 pin, I'm not sure whether the Asus mobo takes them. They are also not the D1 stepping low voltage so it's not clear whether they will overclock too well....

You really should be looking for the SL6XK ones I think.

Bok

EDIT. Yes the mobo takes them ok, but I'm still unsure if they will overclock very well.

anyone here use an ASUS NCCH-DL motherboard? if so what ram are you using, and what timings.

The crucial web site says cas3!!!!!!

have a 4-to-8pin PSU converter cable for the 12Volt lines.

cpu temp is 7degC over ambient.

80GB SATA maxstor 8meg cache

I've got some 2.0s. I hear they OC about the same ratio as the 1.6s - twice as fast - so how does somewhere around dual 4.0Ghz sound? :)

They're $70 each - exactly my cost - which is cheaper than you can get the so called "rare" 1.6's now (which are going for $159 a pair + $20 shipping on eBay now that they have gotten so popular).

(Sigh. I didn't have the spare cash, but I had an opportunity to pick up another 40 of them for $1200) :(

Damn, at $30 each we could have gotten a couple of people together and got these :) Sell them on at a modest profit would still have been good..

Here's the ASUS PC-DL mobo...retail...$179.00 and free shipping. That's cheaper than anywhere else I have seen...

A roomie of mine is having her boyfriend move in so my rent is dropping! Maybe I can afford that mobo here in May or June now!!! Yay!!!

I'll post pictures of that wicked case when I get it built.

No signature required but it costs $15 more...I'd sign for $15 off....

That's a good list though. I may take some of your advice on that....but I'm REALLY LOVING FRY'S ELECTRONICS!!!

200GB Seagate HDD for $129.99 as a grand opening special. :)

If you can be there, great... some folks can't be there when they want to deliver.

Be very afraid of Fry's !

Everytime someone makes a return, they re-box it up, and ship it to a different store in a different state. Looks new, smells new, but ain't! Watch for their 'tags'.

I started shopping at Fry's when they opened here about 5-6 years ago.
It was a great place, until all the 'refurbs' started showing up...

Don't get me wrong, it's heaven to a geek that needs hard to find parts/pieces :)
Watch the packaging closely, shrink wrap doesn't make it new...

I've got one set of the 2.0 Ghz processors left, BTW, and I just ordered two of the IWT's from IBs list, and added the source to my article. I've had one HECK of a time with HSF's and HSF retainers.

That's why the article about building up dualies is taking so long - I'm going to have to revise some of the sources and prices, and I have additional time to wait until the rest of the stuff gets here....

Hmmm... And look what showed up in the "people also bought this stuff" section of the page. AMD 2700+ for $86.

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=19-103-341&DEPA=0

Grrr - so much to buy, so little money.....

Look into Microcenter too At www.Microcenter.com (http://www.Microcenter.com)
They to have real good deals like a WD 80GB HD for 29.95 or a 250 GB for 99.00
I just bought a HP 3000 laptop for 699.00 and got a free printer:thumbs:

Try svc (http://www.svc.com) for cheap parts and hard to find parts. They almost always ship the same day you order. Ground shipping puts the parts at my door next day.

Well the Dual xeon is running happily now, i pulled it back to 3.0GHz 2,3,3,8 timings.

Running DHEP at the moment, just to see if it's 110% stable ran prime95 for 36 hours.

One thing i must say is that it's not as quick as i thought it would be, maybe because it only has 512 of L2. Anyone running some 3.0GHZ with 1MB L2 out there??
I can always wait for the price to come dowm on the latest Xeon's. 3.6's are £470 each at the moment.

For the next Dual i will switch back to AMD Opterons, i have found a site that has all the bits so maybe when the summer gets here i will NEED to build another.

Having said that i am very happy with it:D :D :D :D :D :D

Anybody got a FAD rating for these Xeons yet? Please include O/S if so. Im wondering if 2 Semprons on 2 mobos are better choice.

Why build another Dual Helix??? The Dual Core processors are coming out...if anything just get one of those or find a server board and put dual dual core chips in it!!! Yeah...

That's nice....

Hi Mr Moose,

I will have a look at the ETA for the dual core chips in the summer, IF they are expected by the fall i will wait, but i may have an itch that needs to be scratched by then:D :D
take a look at my DHEP stats!!!!!!!!! will switch off in the morning (19th) UK time.

Heh....the Dual Core chips are scheduled for Summer release. :)

You should be able to get your hands on them by then.

Man I'm dumb....read the article posted in this post. It says Dual Cores are available as of this week. Intel started selling some through name brand PC makers as early as TODAY!!!

re - National High Five day

I know, i know,,,,,,, but it would have been soooooo much better if the right hand had been used. Very Very offensive to middle east peoples.

Had a picture of the interim governor of Afganistan waving with his Left hand as he stepped on to the plane to depart. Laugh,,,,, no, head in hands,,,, yes. Must see if i can find it.:( :(
