Take one P4 prescott 3G processor(~$150), add one Albatron PX865 PE pro motherboard($35 on ebay), stock intel heatsink, and 2x512 pc3200 ddr($99 after rebates from fry's).

set fsb to 260, cpu voltage to +.3, memory multiplier to 1.6, and boot suse 9.1 live cd.

This is what I got.

There are at least 3 problems I found with that setup.

i865 <- old, i875 better.
Intels are better paired with RAM faster than PC3200 which can be found for fairly cheap.
It's better to be able to overclock without voltage increases.

Personally I like Asus boards.

The price difference between the 865 and 875 just doesn't justify the cost diff. I too have a few asus boards but none of them cost $34. The albatron is very stable and works, plus it's got just about everthing my asus boards have.

The PC3200 ram was from my xp2500 oc to 3200 on a A7N8X-E deluxe system. When I buy ram for this new system I will be looking for ddr500. But for now the 5.5GB/s with the ddr400 memory oc to 428 is nothing to complain about! :moon:

Can't find the 865's anywhere on eBay. I see lots of 848's....

And the problem with saying "I prefer ASUS", is that they have about a zillion different boards out there - which one do you mean??

I've got two Prescott CPUs sitting here, just waiting for me to get them motherboards to live in.....

Quick search on Froogle provided this:

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=Asus+i865&scoring=p

Also, there is a cheap mobo at my favorite place to shop (www.emicrox.com):
http://www.emicrox.com/eShop/product.aspx?advanced=1&cid=10009&attr=P4+Socket+478&pid=1441810

It's an ASUS P4 socket 478 mobo for $66. Nice price. Anyone use the mobo listed above (P4S800-MX 661FX AUD VID LAN AGP 8X MATX)???

Yeh but they only make so many for prescott's. If it's socket 478 then get something that's i875, I own a P4C800-E Deluxe, this is their top-of-the-line socket 478 board, and it's prescott ready.

I don't know very much about the new i9xx chipsets so the others will have to fill you in.

Damn.. i should have waited a couple more weeks. I paid that much for the PC3200 memory in that size. (Also at Fry's for the same price.) :bang:
