Nothing to see here ... move along .... all part of my plan :D

Let meep go by, build up a lead (maybe another months worth), then blow his (and Fozzie's) doors off

hehe, few days worth there im afraid. was going to wait till monday and try for a half mil' one but didnt have the patience :)

got things a bit more stable now, should see my output increase a little.

this new xp2100 i got for home is running ok at 2200mhz, first few fad ratings were about 238 which seems pretty good. i am trying to pop two similar spec mobo's in a tower case fed from one psu, my 10,000 points a day tower, or so i hope ;) time will tell.

one question you may be able to answer if someone has a similar board, i got this second hand abit nf7-s mobo, but it refuses to boot (whatever settings i chose) without a graphics card inserted. it does not have any on-board video... anyone come across these and now of a way to make it work? it may just not be suitable for the task, but i got it for its highly rated overclocking features.

ta, Steve.

One of my PXE nodes is an Abit NF7 s.

It is booting up without a video card.

In the bios I have set stop on no errors.

Standard CMOS Features
Halt On
Set to: No Errors

If that doesn't work for you we may have different bios revisions.
I can backup my bios and send it to you if you want.

yep that is set for me too. dont know why it is stopping.

What version of the bios are you running? I got this second hand, i may well grab the latest off abit and flash it up.

if you can send your bios to steve@m33p.co.uk that'd be handy for testing.

/edit:

just to check you have got a nf7-s v1.2 mobo?

I just stuck the latest bios on it, same issue - hangs at boot with gfx card removed. settings are definately correct :(

I have always had problems trying to get a MB to boot without a Vid card in a M$ OS

Does Linux allow for booting without a Vid card ??__:trash:

yup.

Can't say I've ever tried w/ Windows. But most all of my linux boxen have no graphics cards in them.

I just keep a couple spare for troubleshooting when needed.

in this case i do not think it is an OS issue, as the post beeps etc do not even seem to occur.

obviously being blind i cannot be sure how far it is getting - certainly zero hdd activity.

quite frustrating, abit forums have been no use, with most people claiming hardly any mobo's work without gfx - which is clearly not the case.

Can you put a vid card in the MB and boot to the bios Maybe there is a option you over looked I have had some MB that did not post if the ram or Vid was not seated right.
If it does only post with a vid card installed a bios rewrite is the only thing that can fix it. Best of luck to you
Don't :trash:

You can get pci/agp vid cards for like $5-$10 all over the place ...

no no, i do have several graphics cards i am using with this. but i want it to boot (now that the system is setup) without a graphics card.

I am pretty sure there are no bios options I have overlooked, it is just a case of getting the system as basic as pos', so removing the graphics card will be nice. I also want to mount two motherboards face to face, not having a gfx card in either will make this far simpler.

I have also flashed the bios with the latest release, perhaps a 'tweaked' bios will work as desired, but I am not in possesion of such an item....

Is this on Linux or Windows ???

Windows *requires* a video card <sigh>

Are you just trying to save space ? Have you looked at the 'basket' crunchers I've built... Basically mounting everything inside a stackable basket..... You can then stack 4 or so on top of each other and they are easy to transport too :)

Yea i think i have seen some pics of those. It is win xp pro yea, but i think this is failing before then. Unfortunately a simple but trusty S3 trio will have to be used to get it to boot.

It is for space saving yes, but more because I want to mount 2 mobo's face to face in a tower fed from one psu. without a graphics card in either its a lot tighter and tidier.

Never mind, time to resort to plan b :)

I think mine is v1.2

As to windows needing a video card, no it doesn't.

I have had boxes here at home running 2000/2003 without video cards.
The dos based 9x series probably don't work, haven't tested.

Obviously you need a video card to install the OS but if you remove the video card afterwards the box will boot the OS and you can manage it via remote desktop.

As long as the MB is happy to boot without a video card then so will the OS.

I will mail you my Bios shortly.
Just trying to find a working floppy drive to attach to it !!

Well, i do not know how it differed, examined every screen etc but somehow that one boots into windows without a card attached.

Many thanks PCZ - top stuff!

I will know enlighten the chaps on the Abit forum who shot me down before I could finish my question :)

You are joking :)

I have more of these that I hope to get running in a similar fashion, the info could be useful.

For privacy a wee email containing the info in question would be just fine ;)
