How many nodes do you run
I am not looking to get a node count of the team But it is good to know if you want to post it as a poll
But the info I want to find out are the members that are running under 10 nodes.
I truly have NO more room here to add more nodes and increase the output of the team.
So I am Thinking of a Give a way But would like it to go to Free-DC members that only have a few nodes running
So let me know your thoughts on this

I'm running around 20 nodes right now, but when warmer weather gets here I'll be down to around 10 nodes. Our electric rate goes up during the spring / summer months and I can't afford to run all the crunchers and the air conditioning too.
I have 3/4 nodes running at home, trying to increase this but i am having teething problems as you have seen with the 'no gfx card' problem...
Node1: Main PC
Node2: Server
Node3: Laptop (on 24/7)
Node4/5 (in progress): Dual Mobo tower (xp2100's oc'd)
I probably have the means to host several pc's but of course as with everyone not the funds
Relying heavily on my corporate systems atm
Edit: However if you want stuff hosted (and it does not have jet turbines bolted on, i could manage that :) )

Well, I have room for one more, and even have acase to put it in, but can't afford a mobo, cpu, etc... right now.Maybe in a few more months!
Without getting a divorce I'm pretty much full at home with 25 nodes unless I can get another circuit brought into my PC room. Got some of my own pc's in the office also but that's closing this week, so I have to bring them home. I need to sort through them and sell on some of the lower end XP's and then build more dual xeon's instead :p

Most of my nodes are at work since electricity is just too damn expensive over here in California.
Like what IB has mentioned, magnav0x always welcomes spare parts.

i currently have two nodes, and have room to run more.
Oh right, well i can do that, obviously me being in the UK may make that a lot trickier. But if you want stuff running for free-dc I can do that, you could be the other half of this new dual tower if you so wished :)
Yes paypal here.

I only run one node because of my money situation, but I would LOVE to run more. My dad's a Unix programmer, which is close to Linux, so I'm sure I could get some help setting it up. I'm hoping I can get my Windows computer to communicate with it.
I'm between jobs at the moment, but the government agency that helps me find jobs hopes to get me an interview within the week.
One last thing: My rent is fixed and I could probably run at least 3-4 nodes before it was increased.
Restricting me to running FaD is fine.
I won't complain if you don't offer me any, but I'm REALLLLLY hoping.

I only have one node that runs 24/7. Sometimes I'll run FAD on a 2nd node, my laptop, but it is a Dothan, so the performance is pretty weak. I live in the dorms from Sept to June, so I get free electricity so I could probably host a few nodes for people as long as they aren't too loud. I have a paypal account, and well I could probably build a PC with just an old socket A motherboard (I have a 1.2ghz t-bird, 128MB ddr ram, a case, an old video card and an old PSU) but I need to recheck and make sure I have all of those parts. If you decided to help me out, it'd only be fair if we split the points. I am not sure if I'd run the machine in the summer or not as I'd be paying for electricity.

With my latest Sempron addition I don't make your "under 10" cutoff -- but you might get a kick out of my latest scheme: microAtx boards + AMD Semprons made into "blades" using pegboard, stored in a homemade "blade rack"! Of course, they're housed in the MBC (MerePeer Blade Center) running and staffed 24/7 -- until Thunderstorm season! Its the staff that you see always raiding the :fridge: !
n7vxj
04-18-2005, 08:51 PM
MerePeer whats the dimensions on that rack you built to house those motherboards? It looks just about the right size for the space I have left for boxen, and I figure it would hold about ummm...5 more boxen!!! :rotfl:
MerePeer
04-18-2005, 09:08 PM
Picture makes it looks big? Tis 33" x 25" and 16" high. Spacing at the moment about 5.5" per blade. I'll be lucky to get 3 more in there. Proximity to cement floor good for cool temps; might end up being a rusty mistake if too damp but I'm thinking the fan and heat output will act as dehumidifiers. :dunno:
CaptainMooseInc
04-18-2005, 09:41 PM
Just be weary. If the temperature gets too low in there and the humidity is high you may get some condensation on parts and have it short everything out...
Maybe just enclose it in the 3M stuff that doesn't conduct electricity?
Ahhh yes...Fluorinert
http://www.hamptonresearch.com/hrproducts/2797.html
US$71 for a 100ml bottle of it. You can buy a ton of bottles of this stuff, put it in a normal cooler with your beer and run a water pump with a tube in and out of the cooler to a storage cooler in a freezer holding excess Fluorinert. This would eliminate the chance of the Fluorinert overheating. Running the fans in the Fluorinert on the CPUs along with the pump running constantly (at a low pump rate, say 1/2 gallon per minute) would cool the fluid long enough to put back into the cooler.
No risk of shorting out any parts due to condensation because everything is fully sealed allowing no water in.
Fluorinert roXXX.

Well I am starting to look for good deals on part found a Boxed 2400 semps for 42.00 and a all in one board for 49.00 I will post my
MASTER PLAN Later
I have some nodes running in a shed and providing they are turned on there is no problem with the weather.
What is a problem however is allowing the nodes to stop when the ambient temperature is low.
Water condenses out in the PSU's and the result is usually a big bang and the power breaker trips.
I then have to find the dead PSU and get the farm fired up again.
Best to leave em running all the time :D

1 Intel 3.0GHz - Win XP
1 AMD 64 3000+ (2GHz) - Win XP
1 Intel PII 400Mhz - Windows 2000

Thanks!

You aren't posting any numbers Twiztid.
LAURENU2 is posting a list to a private site of his that will look like:
1. CaptainMooseInc
2. Twiztid Truckie
3. Bozo the Clown
etc etc
But it could be in any random order such as:
1. Bozo the Clown
2. CaptainMooseInc
3. Twiztid Truckie
And at the same time Bok is going to post a number to Free-DC.
Whichever number on the list Bok picks will be matched up the name on the numbered list on the other site and that will be who the winner is!
So Bok....don't pick number 2-9...I'm number 1 (I actually have no clue, there is a pun intended there). :)

On second thought, I'll let someone else host it. I am already planning on trying to get another desktop running so running a few desktops in a small room with weak circuits and little space is probably a bad idea. Plus I'd have to pay for electricity during the summer which can get a little pricey or I'd have to leave it off. Thanks for the offer LAUREN2U, it is really awesome what you are doing for the team.

Since there are 8 participants at the moment may I suggest the following:
(1) Assign us the numbers 0-7 instead of 1-8, and
(2) Do three coin tosses in a row, with each toss representing a binary digit(pick what heads and tails will be BEFORE you start tossing)
So if heads meant 0 and tails meant 1
heads, tails, heads equals 010, which would mean the third person on the list(selection 2, since the first and second person is 0 and 1) would win.
Man, I am such a NERD!!!!!!:D

Try this, Meep: Look up an article(and, the, or, etc.) and note how much space the definition takes up, and then think of how easily you use these simple words. My method only SOUNDS complicated.

OK, with the semester over, i finally had time to assemble the goodies... tore my wife's computer apart, refilled the thing
but, initial diagnosis is a DOA motherboard :(
I tried another CPU and stick of ram in it, but never saw it boot. I didnt get to do some of the testing that i wanted, so i havent given up on it yet, but i had to put my wifes computer back together :)
i'm gonna try a couple of other spare parts before I give up on any of the hardware though... more updates to come

Did you make sure the Heatsink/ fan were seated right AND PLUGED IN to to the CPU fan header#1 It will not boot with the fan Unpluged
Or if the memory is not seated right it will not boot
And on some MB the cosmos battary is jumped off so to not drain the Battary
You may need to read the manual to find this out

That's interesting, i didnt know that. My previous heatsink came with an adapter that plugs into the molex (hard drive) plugs, so you dont need to plug it into the motherboard. The first time i hooked everything up, I did use the fan header on the motherboard, but when i turned the machine on, the fan did not turn on. That spooked me a little (not good to see a machine turned on with the CPU fan not running!) so then i plugged the cpu fan into the adapter i had, which worked. It still didnt boot, so only then did i look at the manual... only to find out that i had to set the FSB jumper (havent had a mobo that needed a jumper set like that in a while)... but it still didnt work. ive never heard of a mobo that wouldnt start if the fan header was disconnected (its a good idea though), or one that didnt have the battery jumper set right by default... so i guess i should check those and have a closer look at the manual
Or if the memory is not seated right it will not boot
I am sure i had the memory seated right, because I tried 2 different sticks.
Anyway ill check that stuff and see what happens.
thanks :)
