OK all those of you who feel like giving The Cows a bit of a roasting should start thinking of installing clients and getting them heated up over the weekend ready for the full assault to begin on Tuesday.
We cannot afford to be complacent as they could close the gap we have on them fairly quickly, as we have seen from them before.
So if you are up for it now is as good a time as any.

Yes, I'm sure that you're all asking yourselves that question. But don't get so disappointed before you even get started. You'll be able to challenge us at least a little...
Yumm! Barbeque....

Not more than a little and then we have to look for another REAL challenge :smoking:

Not to worry. We won't give up crunching FaD even if all of you get disappointed and go off and look for some other challenge - maybe one that you can accomplish.
Like, maybe, trying to catch up to team Anandtech or Prime Rib in Seventeen or Bust.
But thank you for being concerned. We won't be disappointed when you give up, especially after having such a nice barbeque (at least until all the food runs out).
As long as you're able to give us some kind of challenge and make sure you're not roadkilled too quick by us we'll be not too disappointed and keep one crunching as long as there's a team on nr. 1 and we're not that team
As long as there's grass we'll be crunching and crunching and ...................

Ahh, but in that search for # 1, Free-DC is the least of your problems.
You are going to have to crunch your way through "XPC".
Then after that bit of challenge, face "TSC!Russia".
And finally, face the most powerfull and dreaded " ".
But you have to get through Free-DC, first, so let the barbeque begin whenever you are ready. Personally as a current member of TKWSN, I taunt you by saying Ni! to all of you silly moo-moos....

@rsbriggs : I don't think this moment there is or will be a problem whatsoever or it must be perhaps FAD will be stopped before we reach our goal
In that case we'll find us another goal to go for
Anyway : Due to the lack of (expected ?) meat during our Stampede we request you not to eat our grass but take a sandwich for that short period instead :weggy:

Yes, rusty English good have circumstances on Tuesdays. Nevertheless, do those phonebook plumbers always remember jumping? Not like a similar happenstance, I'll wager. Oh yes, Tuesday, this much be Belgium. Much pulling of legs....

Many people at Fok are related to tweakers.net though therefor a post at their frontpage was logical. Anyway hopefully the people at Fok can supply us with some extra arms for the :machgun: hunt :sniper: on Little Fozzie

Yes, you can point to member/point ratio :umm:
But is that better (or more "honorable") than others like most of the DPCers running less than 5 cpu's (some just 1 (me 1¼)) at home, not running a big hurd at the office and having to pay for extra electricity-costs themselves
I expect most of you run a hurd at the office (think I read somewhere rsbriggs is one of the big private farmers  )
rsbriggs
05-29-2005, 04:14 PM
I believe that the majority of Free-DCers are "private farmers" - Lauren, Bok, IronBits, PCZ. I used to run a couple computers at the office in addition to my private farm, but I can't do that anymore, so I just have to build more computers.
I would guess that anyone will run work computers if they have the opportunity. Some companies are very strict about security these days and don't allow it.
A few of the big guns are "industrial farmers". Beth133, Fozzie and Meep come to mind :) Dunno about Maefly, or Ronbo.
Heck, if you've got access to them, run them....
I think that the large majority of Free-DC members run just a few computers on various projects - everyone kind of has their own favorite project....

Actually, we have several good sized home farmers, and yes we have some big office farmers too. But you would probably be quite surprised at the number of home farmers we have as we have good representation on multiple projects besides just FAD. :)
The number of members that you have (DPC) though is truly amazing and really demonstrates what can be accomplished by many individuals just running a couple of systems or so each! :)

Just curious to know:
Don't you guys (and girls ;)) have big/enormous electricity-bills, or is electricity that much cheaper in America (or...)?
I mean: in Holland (the Netherlands if you will :p) a lot of people are :scared: to run their PC 24/7 because of the electricity-bills they will get afterwards. Running 1 PC 24/7 for a whole year will cost about 100 euro's extra (compared to normal use, let's say 8/7), so imagine the costs of a complete farm!
Mine is around $350 per month I'd estimate for electricity alone... about 30 machines running right now, plus aircon :)
Bok
Mustard
05-29-2005, 07:49 PM
Mine "averages" about $325 a month for the electricity portion, to include A/C and 20 computers.
rsbriggs
05-29-2005, 07:50 PM
No, power isn't much cheaper here.
I probably pay the equivalent of around 150 to 175 Euros per month for the electricity to run them. It probably amounts to about 2500 to 3000 Euros per year when the air conditioning to keep them cool is figured in.
It's my way of donating to scientific causes, I guess.
LAURENU2
05-29-2005, 08:20 PM
I believe it costs about 10 to 11 dollars per computer per month to run 24/7
My home bill with No AC on runs 650.00 + a month With AC it tops 800.00:cry:
:notworthy :notworthy :notworthy to the Home Farmers
Wish I had a farm like yours, but you can't have it all, so I will stick to my "very little hurd"
Perhaps I can add one, but more is out off the question :(
I can live with it

The ceapest way is this, cpu-onboard (duron).
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Redirect.aspx?MenuID=25
1 powersupply for 2-3 boards and boot with the network.
(some need extra memmory).
Make a mem drive.
Foila.
€90,- a board.
Waiting for someone to do a graph plotting CPU rating (or points) against Watts consumed... LOL :) :) :)

Actually I'm surprised that someone hasn't done that yet as it would really be nice to know what the "best bang for the buck" (and other currencies also) is. Raw power is nice, however the most economical way to realice performance efficiency is nice too. :)

I think someone actually did that, back during Distributed Folding. Can't find the thread, however.
It's no laughing matter, when you factor in air conditioning costs. Obviously, the colder-climate crunchers have an advantage.
As I recall, the best tactic amounts to finding the current "sweet spot" CPU/motherboard combo. That is, the best compromise between cost & performance. At the time, I seem to remember figuring that anything below about 400 MHz was more space heater than efficient bit-banger, UNLESS you drove two MB's off a single power supply. I imagine that figure has escalated up a bit since then.
There are LOTS of variables to consider, though. If you decide to attempt the computation, good luck! :p

DPC Beef - it's what's for dinner? (http://www.gammabot.com/beef/rib_smoking.html)
Wine Marinated Beef Kebabs
*Recipe: courtesy Emeril Lagasse, 2003
1 1/2 pounds beef sirloin, fat trimmed and cubed
MARINADE:
4 teaspoons Essence
1/2 cup dry red wine
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons minced garlic
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon roughly chopped fresh rosemary leaves
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
Other ingredients:
8 ounces button mushrooms, wiped clean, stems trimmed
1 medium yellow onion, peeled, cut in half then into quarters
1 large green or red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces
12 to 18 cherry tomatoes, rinsed and drained
Kosher salt
Olive oil
Place the meat in a large ziplock bag. Toss with Essence. Add marinade and toss to coat. Marinate in the refrigerator at least 6 and up to 24 hours.
Thread 1 meat cube onto a skewer, followed by remaining ingredients until skewer is full. Sprinkle lightly with kosher salt, drizzle on some oil and grill (or broil) until cooked medium-rare, about 6 minutes, turning once. Yield: 4 to 6 servings
