View Full Version : I could've sworn a 500MHz AMD got 45pts/hr

Guys, I don't know what's going on, so I'll ask:

Is it possible that there is more than one 500MHz AMD and that one gets a third(17 actually) the points of another 500MHz AMD(45)? In other words, did AMD create two types of 500MHz processors and one totally blows at FaD?

The reason I ask is that when I first got involved in DC, I had a 500MHz AMD processor and I got about 45 points. Now I have a 500MHz AMD(K6) that used to belong to my brother, and I'm getting a paltry 17.

Can anyone shed some light on this mystery?

2 500Mhz were made.
K6II and K6III.
Plus many boards had settings to up the multi etc.
Mainly they sucked even then but what you gotta use is what you got.

Could be that you had an K7 Thunderbird (?) which also came as 500Mhz and were the first to use the Slot A.

I can tell you tonight how much an 500Mhz Thunderbird can do on FAD....

Thunderbird sounds kind of familiar. That would make sense, since what I have now is some sort of K6(checked in the hardware configuration)

Yep, T`Bird weren`t bad but K6 was crap.
I built my son one back in the day and it`s lying round home now still, gathering dust.

Perhaps here some info to compare with ;)

Barton @ 100x5 = 500MHz = 45

I don't think there were any 500MHz thunderbirds, as thunderbird was not the original athlon (T-bird was a socket-A processor, not a slot).

you are right though, that a 500MHz Athlon will do much better than a K6.

I actually have an original 500MHz Athlon. They came out right about the time i left for college and my dad was gonna get me a computer, so I waited for it and bought the first machine I found with the Athlon chip in it (a Cybermax, great system; too bad they are no longer in business). it was well worth it. Interestingly, the packaging must have been made before the Athlon name was decided on, because it says "AMD 7th genration processor" on it, instea of Athlon

now i'm in grad school, and next year, i will have been in school longer than the incoming freshmen have been alive.
damn, i'm old.

I realized this weekend I have machine boasting a working (as in 'it is capable of running', not as in 'it is ready to have FAD installed') 200Mhz Cyrix CPU lying around. I was tempted to spend the time setting it up just to see what kind of FAD rating it would get ;)

@ Scoofy

That is not quite right, there were slot a 1ghz Thunderbirds...

But just a few and they are today highly valued at ebay. I just can't remember the codename of the slot a cpu's...

I will look it up tonight because in fact I still have two of them running, a 800Mhz cpu and a 500Mhz cpu...

I have a Slot A Athlon @ 750Mhz running FAD right now, but I can't remember the code name either...

[EDIT] there are several possibilities: http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=130978&seqNum=23&rl=1
