Greetings,
We've just completed a full upgrade to the IRC server and are now back to two servers. Thanks to DP for his support in starting his server back up.
Both servers have been upgraded to the most recent stable versions as well as services.
This is great timing as it seems activity in IRC has picked up as of late, I encourage everyone to stop in and say HI!
IRC can be reached by pointing your client to either:
irc.free-dc.org
irc.aknarra.net
Welcome and enjoy!

irc.dp.cx will also work.
Just to let everyone know, my server actually moved to my leased box in Tampa (no longer in Louisville). It's on a dedicated IP, 10mbit connection, leased server. It's pushing over 120 days of uptime.
Just an fyi :)

warlock, the resident bot, also has a new feature that I think everyone might like :)
giving the syntax:
warlock: stats ["]<username>["] <project>
will have the bot tell you your current stats based on Bok's data available at http://stats.free-dc.org/. Sure, you could get it there, but for those of us that are lazy, it's much nicer this way :)
Stop by and check it out!

Note, ["] implies that they're optional, except for names with spaces in them. Those require ".

Yes, the firewall has been always on. Started to have this problem after the IRC update.
I get the following message:
Connecting to irc:aknarra.net 6667
Unable to connect to server

IRC works for me on that server.
Maybe you should send DP or Marc a PM.
They'll check it out.

All I can suggest is a local issue, as others, including myself, have been able to connect with it just fine.

I need more time to figure what's going on.
Thank you all for helping me.

I have the same issue with that Java chat client -
"Can't connect to server" mesage, then it crashes Firefox with a 'client error'.
IE doesn't crash, but still no connect. Firewall off, etc etc

Try changing the server address. I think they all point to the same IP's, but it's worth a shot.
Other than that, I have no idea whats up. I don't have access to the machine thats hosting the java client, so I can't look into further.

Just another little Update.
For all you stat whores, We now have channel stats in IRC!! :)
All info can be reached from here www.aknarra.net/irc
So stop in, chat it up, and watch your rise to the top!!
Also, for those having trouble with ping timeouts, I've changed the settings so I'm hoping that will help.

I think the stats dont quite work right. they only ever seem to show stats for the hour or so previous to when you view them.

Yeah, I'm still working out some bugs. Dealing with 2 different programs, one that does the logging, and one that parses the logs and writes the HTML. Seems they both want to have control over the logfiles.
Hang in there, it can only get better. ;)

UPDATE:
After my battle with channel/user stats, I decided to start over.
A short story:
Rather than use one of the many client-side IRC logging tools, I thought it better to use a readily available module for one of the services we already run. Well, the authour seems to think that we only want daily, at the most, weekly stats. Without a code hack, which I am incapable of doing, I decided to go another route.
So, using an plain old Eggdrop, logging where, and when I want, I think I've got it the way it should be. As long as I have space for the log files, the stats will be cumulative over YEARS.
Now, having said all that, remember, I'm not a programmer, nor even a bad hack. While I understand a great deal of computer tech, I am NOT a programmer/coder. Hell, I can't even do html. Some of this has taken time, effort and research to get working the way I want, and the way I think you want. There may still be bugs, comments or suggestions, be patient and we'll get where we want.
Thanks for your time and patience.
Marc
P.S. And come on people, get in IRC!!!! You have any idea how hard it was to test all this talking to YOURSELF???? ;)

Bump.
Everytime I go into the IRC channel there are only a few people in there. A few months ago it was pretty active. So come on people, join in.

Everytime anyone comes in, this is the basic scenario:
12:00 * x has joined #channel
12:01 [x]: hello?
12:02 * x has left #channel
Now, I'm not gonna say that irc.free-dc.org #lobby/#free-dc are the busiest places in the world. But come on people! Wait a couple of minutes at least.

I used to keep it running all the time, that way I could go back thru and read what I had missed during the day and get caught up, say something, or ask a question and come back to see what the answer(s) or suggestions were.
It grows on ya after awhile. :)
You can have conversations with folks from several timezones that way and learn what others are doing. :D
If I didn't have to stay away from computers, that's where I would be.
You guys should flood his Server, keep the clients running (minimal impact on DCing) 24/7 and just say BOO once in awhile to wake everyone up.
My favorite was tossing the kitchen pots and pans into the room :D

Still can't connect
Tried irc.free-dc.org, irc.d.cx and irc.aknarra.net with the same result from all.
* Unable to connect to server (Software caused connection abort)
Tried with Zone Alarm off, or on. Using mirc under W2K Pro, no other firewall.

Angus, try telnet'ing to irc.free-dc.org on port 6667. Works fine here.
If this works then you have your IRC client configured incorrectly.
Angus
08-24-2005, 09:54 AM
Nope. Telnet didn't work either.
"Connect failed"
About the only way I can even tell I'm finding the site is that I can get a ping response from irc.free-dc.org
Edit -
Any more good (or bad) ideas? :bang: :bang: :bang:
Edit #2 -
I can connect to other irc servers, so I know the mIRC client is working.
I checked the Cisco DSL router NAT tables and added port 6667 mapping from internal to outside world. although other IRC servers didn't seem to need this...

Eureka! I found the problem.
I was tweaking up my virus protection levels last night and found some "new features" in the McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0 version.
There are port blocking rules in there, and the IRC port range is blocked by default!
