How is BOINC doing from a quality of experience standpoint?

Sorry for the lack of creative options, I haven't run BOINC in awhile.

Don't want to turn this thread into a war or anything, but I don't understand what problems people have with BOINC.

I've used it for several different projects and had no problems whatsoever.

Discuss?

it's great. When i first heard about it i thought that i would not use it. But the new version 4.45 works okay. A little bug has been introduced since 4.43, but expect that will be fixed soon.

My main issue with it is the credit scoring. I like to crunch my numbers and have them show up on the site. Not wait until others have crunched the same unit and then get an average or whatever it is...I just hate that PENDING crap..

Also, and this is not a BOINC specific complaint, but 1 update per day on the main stats completely freaks me

The main problems seem to be that

A) most of the sites have a problem staying up, or
B) getting their stats published in a timely manner, or
C) both of the above.

Let's see - right at the moment EAH is down, PAH just published stats after having none for 4 days, Astropulse won't take uploaded work, and Seti doesn't seem to be able to give out work.

Lattice, Orbit, LHC, Pirates, and Burp have no work to give out...

Oh yeah - CPDN has work - but the work units have a due date in a year, and take between 600 and 1400 hours (on a fast machine) to crunch. They seem to update their stats like once per month....

annother issue that buggs the heck out of me is that toooooooo many of the projects run out of work. That sucks for a farmer. For all the time, work, testing, etc., that has gone into it, boinc sure isn't the poster project for distributed computing.

A lot of the issues (granted, not all) you guys just mentioned are problems that you have with the projects themselves, not the BOINC software.

One thing to note is that most of the projects utilising BOINC are fairly new, and not fully established. There are bound to be teething problems so give them a chance to mature!

BOINC seems to have gotten a bad reputation, but I think it is a nifty piece of software, and it simply works for me.

Trying to setup BIONC on 12 systems on dialup sucks.:bang:

There isn't a remote server program like other DC projects, so on a dialup farm its the pits trying to keep all systems loaded with WU's:bs:

it takes forever to download the main files, even when you transfer them between systems.

Seti WU's take forever to download, unlike seticlassic.

Otherwise it seems to be a stable program.

But if it is the way of the future, I will go else where for DC projects.........:neener:

I for one LOVE predictor at home. Of all the BOINC projects, it is the only one looking at real problems being faced today. Yes it is a medical project and I love any project that may cure a disease. All of the other BOINC projects can go awayas far as I am concerned. Except for LHC and alife@home. Particle accelerators are usefull in all areas so LHC is good but closed. Alife@home is dedicated to creating thinking robots which could benefit mankind in the long run.

The biggest problem I have with Boinc is the benchmark code is broken.

Fine if you only have a Single CPU but run it on a dually or a Quad and the numbers are way too low.

Nix benchmark code doesn't do this but, it's just always to low !!

2nd to that is the long delay before you see any credit for work returned, if you actually get any at all !!

To make Boinc acceptable the benchmark code needs fixing, and nix and windows scores should be more in line.

Your results should not be compared to 2,3 or more people before credit is granted.
I don't want to loose points because some moron has overclocked their PC too much and screwed up the WU.

The code needs to be less frequently updated, it is hard keeping up if you have a lot of boxes to manage.

If it really needs to be updated as frequently as it has been thus far then it should not be generally released and should still be in Beta.

I didn't realise what you were posting was an opinion, you didn't say "I think of all the BOINC projects, it is the only one looking at real problems being faced today."

Oh and "the outer space projects" such as Orbit@home (which will monitor near earth objects for potential collisions) might just save our butts one day. Didn't you see Armageddon? :)

PCZ: Have you reported any of the problems you are having as bugs (http://boinc.berkeley.edu/bugs.php)? Looking at the bugs currently in open status, I'm not surprised the code is updated so frequently.

Ach! Forgive me for the typo. I will flail myself with a cat-o-nine tails. Just send yours over. I Think you must have one laying around somewhere. :whip:

Armageddon is a remote possibility that might affect us one day. If you wish to crunch it, that's your choice. I choose not to and that is my choice. :moon:

How about this, you leave all medical projects to me and I will leave all of the Far Out Space Nuts stuff to you. :gangpunch

Now if you don't mind I will go back to watching Sigmund and the Sea Monsters and the Bananna Bunch. TTFN :smoking:

And if you dont recognize all three of those references, you are either too young, or didn't watch enough tv as a child.
