View Full Version : having problems with sb
ive been a member of sb now for 57 days. when i started runnung the program it worked great at first, i was producing 4-5M a day
now, within the last 2 weeks or so, i keep getting this error message that gives me the option of either terminate or debug the program. it usually happens 20 - 30 min after i start the program
anyway, i did get a screenshot of the error message and i think i attached it to the bottom of this post
also im running windows xp pro sp2 w/pentium 4 3.0 ghz w/ hyper threading and 762 Mb ram
any sugestions on how to resolve this annoying problem would be greatle appreciated
A am far from being an expert on Windows error messages, but what I would do is:
Copy the sb-folder to another place (in order to be able to save the work on an eventual started test)
Note k and n
Reinstall sb, eventually uninstall first
Look if it happens again.
Before you do this, you can read the guide 'Fix for Lost Proth Test ' in the main forum, just so that you know how to restore your work when you finished fixing the problem. (If the bug didn't happen just between two tests.
I hope for other replies... H.
EDIT: In fact this post was quite useless I think. Everybody could say the same thing. Perhaps it is better to wait for some help from somebody who really knows what he is talking about.
i appreciate the help that you tried to offer, but i have already tried to uninstall and reinstall, also the problem im having has nothing to do with lost proth tests, although i hope that another easy answer will show up soon

I had one computer that did the same thing last year.
It could run every other project, just not SOB.
I tried replacing one part at a time, except replacing the motherboard.
I sold off or gave away my entire pharm, and I don't recall what became of it.
If you are not overclocking and have already tried replacing video card, hdd, all cables, cpu, nic card, drivers, fresh install of the OS, made sure it was getting plenty of cool fresh air, and are using a clean HS and working Fan, re-applied thermal grease, checked the southbridge HSF, flashed the BIOS and still scratching your head, try replacing the motherboard.
All the parts came from one or more working computers and the parts I had removed from the bad one went back into the other computers and worked fine.
I believe it was an ASUS-VM board, with onboard video, but sticking a PCI video card in it didn't help either.
Mine was an AMD processor XP2600, tried replacing it with a Sempron cpu didn't help either.
Good luck.
If nothing helps, try factoring. It's fun, and you got a Intel with plenty of memory- just perfect. H.

im not overclocking my cpu and im not going to start replacing my entire system either. i find it hard to believe that a nic card or a videocard will make a program fail when the program is not dependent on nic and video cards. i suppose it could be on a bad section of hd in which case ill try installing it into another dir altogether.
also im sure that my system is getting plenty of fresh air cause i got a total of 8 fans. i got 2 case fans, 2 fans for the hd, 1 for the cpu, 1 for video, and 2 more sucking air out
I believe this problem is actually associated with a worm.
Not say that you currently have a worm, but at one point a worm attacked your system and created a registry entry. For some reason sb will crash the comupter b/c of this problem although they are somewhat unrelated. Might be some registry thrashing (sb uses registrty most other DC programs don't) or could be ???.
Anyways I'd guess 99.9% of SB crashing errors are related to the registry or bad memory (doesn't even have to be bad just not 100%). The client asks alot not just 100% CPU usage.
i suppose that that could be a problem that ill have to check out.
maybe delete all the reg keys and try to do another full install

You might also want to check if prime95 crashes.
what is prime95? and how do i use it

Prime95 is - so to say - the program the SoB client originates from.
You can download it here (http://mersenne.org/gimps/p95v2413.zip).
When executing, just say they you want to stress test your system. When your system doesn't produce any errors in 24 hours, it can be regarded as "quite" stable (100% stability is unreachable, but you get very close then).
Hope that helps.
well, i tried running the prime95 stress test but it never made it past an hour or two before it had a hardware faliure
Sounds like that's what the problem is then. This could be casued by processor, memory or power supply (possibly some other stuff too). There's not a lot you can do about it other than try replacing these parts.
Well there are somethings you can do...
Frist please don't say your machine is stable... its not stable enough for SoB might be O.K. for games. Even unmodified compaq/dell/??? may be unstable....
The first thing to do is try to get prime95 to run for 24 hours without crashing...
If you have overclocked see what's failing.
Try keeping the clock speed the same but decreasing the memory cas (2->2.5T)... or try running the memory at 166 mhz instead of 200 etc.
If this doesn't fix the problem try reducing clock speed.
Also make sure your computer is well vented with some additional fans and remove the dust bunnies.
Do you have a semi-recent (>=3.4) copy of knoppix handy?
Put knoppix in cd drive
restart machine
at the bootprompt type memtest <enter>
easyway to test memory with downloading and running another program

hoos:
Could you try the following with prime95:
Options --> Torture Test...
There, you have 3 options to choose. Just test every and report which tests fail (worst). That might lead to a good guess which component is responsible for the instability.
actually, now i think its an airflow problem...
i took of the side and laid it down to work on it to change :trash: something :trash:...
oh yeah! it was to make the reset button work...
anyway, i had it open and was getting the button to work and i left it on it side with the side off and i havent had any errors with sb yet
but keep the help coming, im sure that im not the only person that has had or will have problems with sb
thanks all
