put a firewall with or before your router

i don't run "software" firewalls on my windows pc's (zonealarm, etc) , i put a hardware firewall as the first boxen on my LAN

Most of today's home routers have pretty good firewalls built-in. Just don't assume that the default settings are adequate. RTFM! You need to read enough of the manual to be sure you understand how it's set up. Doesn't take a degree, just a bit of attention to detail.

If you've got specific questions, let us know what brand & model router you've got. Likely one of us has worked with it.
