was looking at the Free-DC stats and the actual results produced by WCG and there is no relationship that is immediately obvious - would someone like to enlighten me on just what Free-DC results represent in relation to WCG results

Which stats are you looking at ? BOINC World Community Grid Stats or old Classic World Community Grid Stats ?
The former is the current stats and are the exported BOINC credits from the WCG project. These have always been 7x what the points shown at the WCG site itself, it's historical but always been like that. Perhaps that's what you mean ?
