Has anybody done VHS -> DVD transfers?

I've got a heap of old video tapes that are crying out to be transferred to DVD. Some of them are getting grainy and could snap at any time. Since there's no sign that some of these will ever be issued on DVD (or not any time soon) I'm looking to backup onto DVDs.

What I'm starting with is a P4 2.4, and planning to replace its tiny drives with a couple of big ones. New OS (it's running NT4), more memory, modern video card, DVD+/-RW, et pricey cetera. I've looked around, and I'm leaning toward the Pinnacle DV500 DVD Pro, but I'm not married to it.

I thought I'd see if anybody's actually got any experience with this process, and can suggest other software packages, models of DVD writers, etc.

Thanks, that site's got a lot of info.

Now that I've got most of the new hardware and software picked out, I just have to figure out whether I want to spend all that money on this project. Not to mention the time to edit a hundred or so tapes...
