All,
I have a question regarding DPAD configuration and how it impacts
the optimal performance.
I have two types of machines. The type 'A' machine has isolated
CPU <-> memory busses (dual channel & interleaved) for each CPU
with global memory as well. The type 'B' machine is also multi-cpu,
but has global L3 cache and truly 'NUMA' busses to memory where
each CPU can freely access the entire memory (8GB) independently
as 2 x dual-channel.
I refer to the ASUS and the new Tyan motherboards for AMD 940
pin configurations (ECC memory - all 2-2-2-5, providing 2-3-2-6
effective performance).
I currently have DPAD configured for 'auto' thread management for both.
Is this optimal for these configurations or should I trim them back to
running single threads per core?
My AMD-64 machines are configured for auto as well (754 and 939 pin).
The dual processsor machines typically run 8 threads per processor
which matches the 4 threads on the single processor machines.
So, I see '4' threads per core. I've read about running 1 thread for
each core, on a per-machine basis.
Final note: I see about 0.2% idle time in '4 thread per core' configuration.
I attribute this to task switching and memory bus contention. Correct?
Suggestions for optimum configuration / performance anyone?
Thanks,
Chuck
If you go single thread, you have to edit the config.txt
Threads (number or 'auto'): 1
Then make as many dirs and copies as you plan to run.
I did this on my dual cores and both procs were pegged nice and proper.
I didn't benchmark anything, but I think they ran better that way.
Plus everytime it finishes a wu or stops to send etc. the other ones keep running, so I'm sure it's more effecient that way.
Plus if one of the threads borks and crashes, the others keep ticking...
cool.
thanks!
I will try it and also benchmark it. I will report back to the thread.

lynette. :|party|: :bouncy: :elephant:
Any doubts feel free to contact me or edorajh or chuck or bok or lauren or merlin. Hehe.
Carlos
Edo,
I'm going to write a full DPAD tutorial on how to join and run DPAD for us. Then can you add it to your first post here in this thread? If you can't Bok can. I will send it to him later on.

Windows Client:

Setup the client:
1º - Extract the files into a folder
2º - Create a user.txt file with notepad and add the following line:
Free-DC Mercenaries[Free-DC.org]
or download attachment.
3º - Open config.txt and setup the client options.
4º - Run the client using muon1_cmdline.bat or muon1_background.exe. First one will run it under a DOS box and the last one hidden, check taskmanager.Quote:

5º - If you have auto-send results off you have to send them manually using manualsend.bat. Don't need to kill muon1_background.exe.
The results are recorded in a file called results.txt.
6º - If you get trouble sending the results do not delete those 20060101-442562-fgtht-Free-DC Mercenaries[Free-DC.org].txt files. Rename them to results.txt. The server might be down.
7º - Stats pages:

Bok or IronBits,
Please add this to Edo's first message. Then you can delete this message. Thank you. Going to sleep.

Yea, I can't edit my first message, so I hope Bok will do it.
Thanks Carlos, nice intro!

Welcome to the fleet Lynette!!!!!
Before long, you'll be as :looney: as the rest of us!!! :rotfl:
FYI to all. I am departing Thursday PM (Central US time) and will be
travelling to Pennsylvania. I will return Sunday.
I will dump my data right before I leave Thursday, then
send in another dump upon my return Sunday evening
unless suggested/desired otherwise.
PS. I benchmarked the machines. The overhead (0.2%) I
am getting is NOT due to the multi-thread. The cores are
handling 4 threads each just fine. It's the OS overhead
of my LAN and filesharing. LOL. It took a long time to
catch it, but we have the good old LANMAN protocol
to thank. Thanks to everyone for the input.
C.
What do you all think of an Avatar for us to use on projects that
reflects Free-DC, tailored for use by us and adaptable for other sub-teams
as well as Free-DC in general?
Anyone have a) an opinion b) if sufficient desire, and artistic talents
to pull it off?
C.
Chuck I think it's an excellent idea. I would love to help but I don't have any artistic skill. 2 year old child graw better than me.
Anyone else?
Edo
Gang,
Just sent off another batch (2100K) to be uploaded.
Looks like more points in this set, but not certain.
We'll have to wait and see for certain, but the MPTS
values are higher than last time.
C.
Yes, I said I was going to wait, but what-they-hey....
Points are points!!! :)
Chuck,
Got the email. I will upload them on Saturday.
Carlos
Thanks!!!
To all: It turns out the muon executable keeps loading any unsent
results into memory and keeps (I think) it in the autosave file... that
has a big impact on performance. I watched the Page Fault continue
to increase and the thread count continue to decrease as the file size
increased.
I'ld love to figure out how to get absolute maximum points out of this
apparantly well written program. The balance between threads, results.txt
records, and 'extra points per thread' is an interesting experiment. :)
This little beauty has a wonderfull 'mind of its own'... never running quite
exactly the same on any two machines. :) Indeed clever and my compliments to the author. :)
C.
Chuck,
I'm in my lunch break so I just checked how much you have on your results txt files. Nothing more than 200840,8 Mpts. My work machine has 35416.5 Mpts and my home machine ~50000Mpts.
What about writing a linux client?
Carlos
Well, I have 2 machines that seem to hate Boinc. Guess I'll try moving them to DPAD for the Mercenaries :hifi:
I may have just gotten one of them going on DPAD we shall see!
Thank you JustEmazing! We appreciate your membership at Free-DC Mercs.

Just a quick note. I dumped my results and Chuck ones because I don't know if I will be able to dump them tomorrow.

20060310-234519 297 results sent to muon1.superstring.org

Carlos
Dump day.
I would have thought we would have more of a dump I U/L about 3400 KB of WU for the merc's on saterday:confused:
All,
Just returned from Pennsylvania. New car in hands.
PC's had shut down due to storms (hail/tornados/etc) through
this region.
I will ship my data for posting as soon as the HD's all get done
with chkdsk & restore.... they took a HARD hit.
C.
PS: Brought back another processor w/ 2-2-2-5 RAM &
a CL 2.5 RAM upgrade for the an existing machine.
Built a new 754 machine over the weekend as well.
Have extra 2-2-2-5 ram (Corsair non-ecc) for the 3700+ now.
That will be online and contributing ASAP.
This will effectively add 2 FAST processors.. Almost as good as
dualies or X2's. :)
Total CPU cores adding will be 3 (2 @ 2.4, 1 @ 2.8)
Ok all you DPAD experts :) ,
I have a noob question.......... AGAIN (LOL)
What is a 'queue.txt' file and why do I have this at the bottom???
1.530616,1.483618,1.410641,1.465783 (2014.8 Mpts) [v4.42c] {D4A5FC927B3AE4319B1399D7} <ChicaneLinacB>
Is it onto something significant? It has been running for MANY hours now and seems to be updating the 'results.txt' file every 5 hours or so.
C.
PS: I looked for answers on the web site and found nothing, but did notice that there are *STILL* 2 different spellings of Free-DC Mercenaries. Can we get the name corrected (on the server) and the points moved? May I also ask the Mercenaries to check the spelling of their team name in 'user.txt' ?
The accounts can't be merged until we all check our nodes and correct the wrong ones.Quote:

Mine are checked and double-checked. All good.

That is in the downloaded files !!!! :)
/*Edit*/ We (Free-DC as a whole) are starting to dominate the downloaded lattice files :) /* End Edit */
What a Team!!!
C.
PS: Checked my files, all are ok.
:bouncy:
Dump day.
I found a way, maybe only temp, to 'auto dump' myself.
So, for now, I am letting DPAD auto-send / auto-update.
I found a better config for my machines. As soon as I am sure
of the performance, I will share with all.
Let's see if we can get under 100 days to overtake Anandtech today!!!!
C.
We are already under that number:lmao: -->:Pokes: --> Pick a better oneQuote:

True, we are now... as of this morning... when i posted, we were still 101 days.
(while you were still sleepin' :Pokes: )
that '97' looks sweet !!
Congrats to all
C
okay, another question about it. DPAD, is that BOINC or another manager or no manager or what. how do i do that particular one? another question, what is dumping?
DPAD is not a BOINC project. Don't tell anyone but I hate BOINC. The old projects are more stable...Quote:

Dumping is when you buffer results and send them in big scale, just to crash the server, hehe!!
Despite my bad english I'm trying my best to answer all your questions.
Carlos
Ya I do not like Boinc that much either :umm: But the folks at Rosetta have made grate improvements and it is much more stable now.
After the rush to protect our #1 standing is over there:cheers: I will point some more power back to DPAD:cheers:
Calling all members. Let's start running DPAD.
Carlos
windows only......
I must say DPAD does play nice with the Red Library DLV Project:thumbs:
But they do need to beef up there stat server:Pokes:
So who wants to push Free-DC a little closer to first place?
Carlos
Already started to move my machines to DPAD.
Carlos
Calling all Mercenaries to arms. I will start moving my machines next Monday...
As usual dumps are on Saturdays but we can always schedule the dump to the end of the month.
