Howard said there'll be a beta test phase before its full release. So I assume that there'll be 1 or 2 more proteins that'll use the current algorithm.
Vic
I don't see why. If they have the CPU horsepower to pull out ahead, they'll just do it again when the stats are zeroed.
Vic
1) Don't worry about finding beta testers. The dismal response to the ScreenSaver was because most of us are hardcore crunchers and had no interest in it. A new algorithm that may produce better...
Howard,
Since this new algorithm is such a dramatic change have you considered doing a beta release to a small no. of participants. Let everyone else keep running with the current software until...
According to the 'EDIT:' line it sounds like Howard decided that unique IDs and 50 generations limit won't be needed.
I too 'sneakernet' numerous systems so Howard I think you should keep this in...
I've downloaded the Tru64 UNIX version of the latest protein and started it. I've noticed that error.log is growing at about 25 lines per minute. The messages are about 'Contact between residues'....
I think this is what you want:

I assume you're talking about TruCluster. Either way you have to have one directory per cpu.
If the client aborts again, provide the following:
1) Which Windows OS you're running (98, NT, etc).
2) Any message that appeared in the DOS window.
3) Look for a file called error.log in the...
The ps option -C in LINUX is select by command name. For example,
# ps -C sshd
PID TTY TIME CMD
1069 ? 00:00:18 sshd
27818 ? 00:00:07 sshd
FYI: If you go to the F@H NEWS section you'll find links to other articles published so far:

I've run up to 4 instances using the same temp directory without any problems.

Howard,
Thanks for the gory details. I was curious myself. Inquiring minds want to know. :D

Looked at the NEWS section, saw the note about the UNIX bug, and how to fix: 'To correct for now, you can change your TMPDIR environment variable or location of your client so they are on the same...
I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware problem. I installed the client on another system and got the same results.
Vic
Howard,
I just downloaded the new protein and installed it on Tru64 UNIX. I let it run for awhile and then deleted the lock file from another terminal session. When I did I got this on the...
The rule is if you send structures for the old protein with 24hrs of the switchover you get full credit. If you send them within 48hrs you get 1/2 credit. After that they're not accepted.
Vic
Interesting. I usually use Tru64 UNIX and you need the nohup. I just tried it on a LINUX system and it appears you don't need nohup there. So, if you're using LINUX, nevermind. :)
Vic
With ./foldit & the background process will terminate if you log off. I use the following:
nohup ./foldit > ./foldit.err 2>&1 &
Make sure you use the -qt option in the script to disable the...
According the the NEWS section, the CASP results will be available in early December.
If DF turns out not to be the best predictor, then they'll have to work on improving it. I think it was...
Nothing to be worried about. It's just part of the normal processing. You'll also see messages like this:
!!! Contact between residues GLN and ALA too close !!!
Ignore them.

I run the client on Alphas and yes it is fast. The fact that you have a *quad* system means you generate a hell of a lot of structures. (You'll have to run 4 instances of the client, each one in...
You can run two instances if you set up two directories, say one is distribfold and the other is distribfold2. Copy the files from distribfold to distribfold2 and then start the client in each...
