Try to repair explorer.
Carlos
A windows machine of mine has suddenly decided it will not run explorer, nothing happens at all. I just get a blank desktop, ctrl-alt-delete and try run-> explorer nothing!!
Safe mode is the same.. no viruses that I can tell, hijackthis does not report anything, nor ad-aware/spybot.
I'm not that bothered about it as I can easily re-install, but it's an interesting oddity.
Windows XP.
Anyone seen this before?

Try to repair explorer.
Carlos
I seem to recall a virus overwriting it, but can't remember which one it was.
As you know, Explorer IS the desktop! Like Carlos said, try repairing Explorer.exe or maybe just replacing it would be easier. If you can get a look in Windoze, it should be 1,032,192 bytes long and dated 6:00AM on 8/4/2004.
HOME: A physical construct for keeping rain off your computers.
Don't have a CD hooked up to it to be able to boot from the disk right now. The size is different but then this has no service packs installed..
I've got EasyExplorer running on it which works okish.
I'll just upgrade it I guess (to linux )
