    An Early Christmas Present

The site's been pretty slow since I moved it over, in part because it's been sharing resources with my new stats system (which is VERY CPU intensive). You'll all be happy to know that both the site and my stats systems are getting brand new machines for Christmas.

The Free-DC site & forum are about to move from a dual P2-450 where they share CPU time with the stats engine to a dedicated web server running a P3-1000. Just dropping the stats stuff will make a big difference, since all the system will be doing then is serving pages.

The stats system is about (maybe tonight) to get moved to a new dual Athlon MP2000 server. This is where it will live for the the forseeable future. This box is brand new (the parts just came in today). It's got a massive RAID array using all 10K rpm SCSI Ultra3 SCA drives and a PERC 3/DC RAID controller with 128mb cache on board. This should dramatically increase the stats speed over the next day or two. It's also going to give me room to keep stats history for everyone in the project for at least a year at a time.

So...if the site's seemed a little poky lately, hang in there, it should get a whole lot better real soon.

So Dyy, can you post the specs of your new dual MP system, like what motherboard and type of RAM, etc...? I hope in the new year to get a Dual MP system as well but I'm not sure what motherboard to use in it. Also, I hope it doesn't take too long for AMD to release the 512KB cache version of the CPU since I would much prefer that.

    Sure:

    • 2 x Athlon MP2000 processors
    • Tyan Tiger S2460 (Uses AMD760MP Chipset)
    • 3 x Corsair CM73SD256R Memory Modules (256mb Registered ECC DDR)
    • 2 x 3com 3C980C Network Cards
    • 1 x ATI Rage Pro AGP Video Card
    • 1 x PERC 3/DC Dual Channel SCSI Ultra3 RAID Controller (128mb cache)
    • 7 x Seagate Cheetah 36ES 10k RPM 18.4gb Ultra160 Drives
    • Enlight EN-8950 Server Case -w- PC Power&Cooling T42ATX 425w PS
    • Mandrake Linux 9.0

The Tyan was a no-brainer for me. It wasn't outrageously expensive (since I didn't need the onboard SCSI model) and it comes with 64bit PCI slots which are well suited to the RAID controller I'm using.

Some of the stuff (the RAID array, case, video card, and memory) I already had around. The rest was bought new.

I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it."

Well, it's sure as hell fast enough now.

    Damn. Blazing. I love it.

    Thanks Dyy, great work.

LOL, you posted exactly two minutes after the move.

It'll actually get just a tad faster for people on slow connections, since I haven't got mod_gzip running on the new system yet, but I'll have that finished in about 30 minutes.

Yeah, I came out of a UT2k3 match and thought I check in. It was down so I told the guys in IRC that the move was probably in progress. Sure enough.

It's a hell of alot faster here. mod_gzip will make it that much better.

    Nice work.

    Thank you, Dyyryath
    Much faster for me now.

Nice dual, but you should remember that this board- 2460, has had trouble with ATX connector melting (all the power going through there), specially the 5 volt lines. Picked it up at 2cpu.com.

    <and Dyy>
Has anyone used any materials to combat that heat/ meltdown problem?

My suggestion would be some automotive lube marketed by General Motors. Part #12277900 , 2 oz (57 grams) Dielectric Lubricant. It's in a plastic screw-top tub.

It's good for harsh-environment crimp-on wiring, starter connections and almost any sort of switch. I haven't had a need for it in a box, but I'd probably use it for this problem. Around US$10 -12 at a GM dealer.
