132K error.log since starting over with a clean install.
Agent Smith was right!: "I hate this place. This zoo. This prison. This reality, whatever you want to call it, I can't stand it any longer. It's the smell! If there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it."

in under 12 hours I have 25,300 errors of this kind (1.7MB) - with the old method I was (un)lucky to get ~10 during the whole period...

So, each day it'll grow by ~3.5MB - if this runs for around 5 weeks that'll be a 122MB error log

Is there any way to stop this error being reported? Or having the error.log emptied periodically?

For those who haven't seen the posts elsewhere, create a directory called error.log. The program can't write to a directory but this seems to have no ill-effects so far.

i had the error thing happening on one box that auto-downloaded. when i re-did it, it worked fine

It seems to be working here!

Great, but I don't really want to have to do that on 25 PCs, one Wintel server and 11 Sun instances! I did the directory error.log thing and that is working for now.

Could we perhaps be told what of the "old" files is causing the problem and should be replaced?

That's what I did on my main one but it's generating the most errors!
