    Desktop Screenies

    I like screenshots...so here's one of mine...

    http://atg.hobbiton.org/imac.jpg

    So what YOU got?

Agent Smith was right!: "I hate this place. This zoo. This prison. This reality, whatever you want to call it, I can't stand it any longer. It's the smell! If there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it."

Just a plain screenshot of my FreeBSD box doing its usual thang. Stuff includes:

Blackbox 0.65.0 with taskbar patch (style "Spiff" (distributed with source))
Phoenix 0.5 (shaded, theme "MicroPhoenix 1.3")
    rxvt (font "shine")
aterm with transparency and fading (font "smoothansi")
    GKrellM 1.2.13 (theme "prime_23")
    bbkeys 0.8.5 (iconified)
    wallpaper "blue_forest.jpg" from shiftedreality.com

I keep forgetting to grab ImageMagick. xv for screenshots isn't very pleasant

Gotta get Waimea functional one of these days and try it out.

    Last month's desktop:

Dyyryath's Desktop (Outdated Link - Disabled)

Right now I'm experimenting some more with KDE 3.1 & Mandrake 9.1. We'll see how it turns out after I've had some time to play with it.

    Heh, it's convenient.

Yeah, I know the rule. "Only act as root when you have to. Making a mistake as root could have severe consequences."

On production machines & whatnot I generally work as dyyryath. On my development box, though, I'm always root. Believe it or not, if you think before you do things, it's really not that big of a deal. In the fifteen or so years I've been working in Unix, I've never made a really ugly mistake as root. (Of course, having said that, I'll now promptly have some kind of brain cloud and issue rm -rf * from the root directory. )

The only other drawback to being root is security. Generally if I'm doing something that could be a security risk (i.e. running an IRC client) I run it as a normal user.

What can I say? I guess I'm just a foolish rebel.

Threads like this are insanely popular over at Ars (last I checked a screenshot thread was at 54 pages). I wonder why that isn't so over here?

I'm just gonna clean up one of my Windows boxen and throw a screenshot here in a bit.

I think people at Free-DC tend just run the dog snot out of their computers and tinker with them, OC them, etc vs posting screenies Less interested in eye candy.

Yeah, that would make sense. Its one of the main reasons I only posted a screenshot of my FreeBSD box, because my Windows box is so slimmed down that it is nothing to look at. Oh well, I'm eating up DF/OGR cycles posting this, so I should shut up and assume the crunching position

I don't mind looking at the occasional screenshot. In fact, I usually find it fascinating. It's interesting to see how other people organize things. Eye candy is always fun, too.

LOL, I guess we have different taste in women. She's a little too bright & shiny for me.

If I was going to have wallpaper with a woman on it, it'd probably be this one.

    I like tough, crazy women.

Don't get me wrong, I like em tough and crazy as well, but there's something about a woman in a Tennis skirt that gets me all fired up...

Well, our new friend is running Windows, but he's also got Firebird, Cygwin, & Blender so I guess we can let the Windows thing slide.

As they say, the customer is King. And if our customer wants stuff that works under Windows, we better test it, right?

My first choice OS would be a Linux-kernel powered one, though. As probably already has become clear in previous posts.

That's what I use vmware for. Of course, I do have a handful of Windows XP boxes upstairs for playing Battlefield 1942 on, so I guess I shouldn't really be giving you too hard of a time.

gDesklets, yes, which is pretty much Karama for Gnome. It was a 5 minute hack that I never got around to making any fancier.

Believe it or not, if you think before you do things, it's really not that big of a deal. In the fifteen or so years I've been working in Unix, I've never made a really ugly mistake as root. (Of course, having said that, I'll now promptly have some kind of brain cloud and issue rm -rf * from the root directory. )
The first time I installed Linux was Slack on a 386, back when 386's were hot. I had a lot of fun playing with it until the day I went to delete a temporary directory.

You guessed it - I didn't do a pwd first, didn't realize I was at /, and did an rm -r. Everything worked great until I rebooted it.

It was educational. I haven't done it since. I highly recommend working as root only on a scrap box until you do something like this. You'll never do it again .

Ok, here is mine...the file is huge! EDIT: IB fixed the file...now 110k instead of 1100k!

No one else would know where the artist got the inspiration for the drawing from. Other than it is a book they made me read in 8th grade.

Chinasaur: That's a very nice looking desktop. I love the colors. OS X is nice to look at, no doubt. In fact, I've been very impressed with it all the way around. I'm not willing to give up Linux/Gnome for it, but it's definately a classy OS.
