How long is the prime that GIMPS have (maybe) just found?

GIMPS have just found a probable prime. It is being double-checked right now. They expect it will be finished by June 21st. How long do you think it will be?

I put 7M to 10M, I'm just guessing this from the time they're taking to verify it!

    oops, didn't see that!
Well, I guess the only question now is if it's more or less than 7M!

If I recall the list correctly, the three highest ones have something in the neighborhood of 1M, 2M and 4M digits, so I'll say this one will be 8M (+/- 10% or so) just because it would look nice.

GIMPS is currently testing exponents near 20,000,000 - so you can be sure the new find is under 6 million digits.

I know, some have still gone wrong, though
The reason this is so easy is because I posted it before GIMPS annouced anything interesting about the prmie!

I just pulled this off the GIMPS homepage:

"40th Mersenne prime not found On June 1st a possible Mersenne prime was reported to the server. Unfortunately, two independent verification runs proved the number was composite. This was the first false positive report in 7 years. We are studying ways to reduce the chance that cpu or memory errors can cause a false positive report."

I was so excited for Woltman and GIMPS.

    Unhappy

    That's a pity.

Well, what can I say more? Although it would have made it harder for SB to get the largest prime, it's sad anyway that this extreme reward fot their effort did not occur...
