Man... I can feel the buildup of anticipation for Phase II all the way here in California.

There are like so many participants just lingering around the DF Forums waiting for news on the new client.

Its so cool.... feels like a carnival!

    Ah Fer Fsck's sake!!!

Ok...I'm coming back...gotta see how this beastie runs after all the time runing DFI.

I just put my single XP1800 on it and I'll get the duals cranked back up sometime Saturday or Sunday.

At least I got a month's break on my electric bill

    Ah, things are getting exciting.

It's good to see some of our old faces coming by again and taking up arms.

    In fact, I could've sworn I saw xj10bt producing a few WUs...

Ouch. There's a little fire power there....

I've got about 10 gigglehurts I could throw behind you, if you wanted a little extra, but nothing nearly enough to fill in the the 20K / hour gap there...

I still have half a dozen machines that are anxiously waiting at home.
    Sometime this weekend.

But, I don't think any one of us can take him on head-to-head.
It will have to be a team effort.

And, not to change the subject any... team ARStechnica seems to have doubled their active users to about 75 from the 30-something they had going yesterday. They seem to be closing the gap rather quickly...

<hint> Yes, team effort... If IB were to PM me with his handle he might see an extra 5K to 8K per hour added to his overall....... </hint>

Ars Technica's DF team got some front page exposure this week. It was bound to cause us some problems. Of course, It's nice to see that even with half as many active users, we're still outproducing them.

I'm tinkering with the idea of using *some* work machines, but I'm still a little leery of this client. I'll give it a couple of weeks and see if any major problems manifest now that everyone is using it. In the meantime, I'm going to whip up an 'installer' of sorts for Linux and Windows that'll make it easy for non-DC people to install the client. This should make borging boxes a little easier.

I'm envisioning a CD that you pop in and let autorun. The user gets a GUI dialog box with two buttons: Install Distributed Folding & Uninstall Distributed Folding. They click install and it puts a client on the machine which is preconfigured with the cruncher's handle & all necessary switches. It'll also install dfGUI. If it's a Windows 95/98 box, it'll put dfGUI in the startup group with the 'hide client' switch, start in tray switch, & autostart client switch. If it's an NT based version of Windows (NT,2000,XP) it'll install the client as an automatic service. When it's done, it'll start the client, tell the user it's done & eject the CD.

The uninstall button would simply do all this in reverse.

I've got several friends with machines who'd be willing to let it run, but don't want to hassle with installing it and worrying about it. This should take care of that: Put a CD in, click a button, take CD out.

I'll also make a Linux version.

That would certainly make things alot easier Dyy. It's rough trying to walk someone through that over the phone, especially when they are not really fluent in "computer".

    Thanks!

Sounds cool. Are you going to make this publicly available? I'm honoured that you are bundling dfGUI with it.

Yeah, I think I'm actually going to make a 'web tool' out of it. For example:

You go to a web page and enter your handle. Then you enter the switches you want to use. Then you hit 'Submit' and the tool creates the ISO with your config built in and send sit to your browser as a downloadable file. All you'd have to do then is burn it to a CD and start passing out copies. I like those little mini-cds myself.

Digital Parasite: How could I possibly include anything else? You've got the best tool going.

    LOL

Actually, my problem appears to be keeping the clients I've already installed running. Each day I get one or two that just stops going (the process dies). I haven't looked into it deeply enough yet to figure out what it is, but it's definately a problem I'll have to iron out before I put the rest of my boxes on it.
