I have managed to verify the cause of the 910 - Illegal or missing previous generation messages, when they occur along with 'unable to contact server'. It works like so.
Suppose you upload generation 49. Your data gets uploaded but because the server is presently overloaded and thus slow, your client times out waiting for a reply and assumes the upload failed. Meanwhile generation 49 gets added to you current movie on the server, after gen 48.
Next time around to upload, it tries to upload gen 49 again (because it thinks it failed before). This time the upload gets through, but your last generation is now 49, not 48. Hence the server issues a 'missing previous generation' error - generation 48 is no longer the last generation in your movie - and the client responds by logging the error and deleting gen 49 from disk (as intended). Then it tries to upload gen 50 which will append to the end of gen 49 without error (unless it times out again..)
Thus the 910 message really indicates that your data is getting uploaded twice. Which may be annoying but isn't as horrible as it sound. And the second time it gets deleted so its back on track. So no data is actually being lost. You can verify this by checking that your points are still increasing, and that the first filename in your filelist.txt is advancing slowly.
This is thus all inended behaviour to allow the clinet to adjust itself to a busy overloaded server.
It is of course still our problem to make the server 'unbusy' but at such time that we do, all your work shoudl still upload fine withOUT any losses (unless you've had different problems than this..)

Good to hear that cause of problem is solved... But I think I just buffer to generations until I see post where someone says for rock sure that there is no problems with uploading. Nothing bad but I have started folding from 0 three or four times now. ONCE have I folded all 250 generations. Everytime else it has stopped to previous generation not found around 100-150 generation. And after that error it buffers all... I doesn't even upload new generations, just buffers them...
Again, if you are getting that error along with unable to contact server, you do NOT need to restartm it is working properly. Just keep going and it will eventually upload everything.

damn, just reinstalled again lost another 60 odd gens, oh well, will know for next time
I had at least 40 entries in my error log that were paired "can't talk to server" "error 910, missing generation" - and yet they were all uploaded, and my system was merrily working on 10,000 structures for gen 0. It seems to have successfully uploaded the first 0-250 generations.
The trick is to stay calm, leave the room for 10 minutes, and come back and check it again. If it still causes trouble, shoot the PC

I just wanted to ask everyone to keep an eye out and make sure that things are getting uploaded despite the error (as Howard explained).
It appears my own client has had the error and continued crunching happily since.
Please let me know if something different starts happening that is related to this error - and in the meantime I will try to work out a cleaner way to get around the error message.

My client continues to crunch and buffer work, but keeps giving the same error and thus won't upload; neither is my score increasing. Just thought I'd let you know.

I have the same problem as sheriar. Bug 2, error 1. It will continue fold and buffer more and more generations but nothing will upload thus, wasted effort. What caused this error? In the middle up uploading generations, I either got disconnected to the internet or closed out the black uploading window during upload. I can't remeber which.

I too just had this error on a machine that ran fine for days. My other machines are as yet unaffected, but their only commonality is Win2k. (i.e. hardware is significantly different)
I was online for a few hours, waiting for the client to upload "naturally" and when it didn't show ANY progress on the current generation after 2 hours or so I clicked the UPLOAD button in DFGui 3.01. DFGui then said "attempting to stop..." and I went on about my winamp and file-sharing fun. A minute or so later I checked back and DFGui was locked, but the system was fine, so I ended the task and restarted DFgui in the hopes that the client was still running, but it wasn't. Tried again, DFgui failed again. Clicked "recover" and the cli restarted, but wouldn't stop. Hard closed cli and just clicked "upload" in DFgui. Client started and reported prev gen missing error.
Message is pretty straightforward (I removed my username from the filename and replaced with *username*)

Other than that, just lots of "failed connect" messages, going back for 5 days (the date of install).
Do the "manual upload" instructions need modification for this situation or can I follow them to fix this?
This issue seemed to happen for me after uploading filesets was interrupted. Since apparently it deletes the file after it uploads couldn't I make a copy of the DF folder before I upload, so if my connection is cut off I can replace the missing files. Would this cause a problem?

i think those are all the errors that i havent been credited for
the only thing i have changed since i started getting these errors is to add my server to my folding and it started from fresh i havent tried to upload from the server yet from fear of losing all those folds as well
I've figured out a way to resolve the issue, but I think it's mostly in conjunction with the gen 338 issue. One of my clients stopped somewhere after finishing it's first generation. Whenever I would upload my work, I got a STATUS 907 FOLD LOG PARSE ERROR/UNKNOWN HANDLE. I looked through my filelist.txt, and didn't see anything wrong. So I wrote a script to search the filelist.txt and see if there were items in there that didn't have a corresponding file on my drive.
I found a single set of lines in there that matched this case. I removed the lines, and immediately got the "MISSING PREVIOUS GENERATION" message. From reading the above, it's basically where one of the files has overlapped.
Luckily for me, the first 5 or so entries in the filelist were for the previous generation. I removed those entries, and uploaded, it worked like magic!
so you are saying a little more selective editing of the filelist.txt may get my two dumps of work from the 337 bug to go

well that theory would be ok if i still actually had the files on my hard drive but it uploaded them and deleted them as it should do but they just werent added to my score
i would have to say overall phase2 sux compared to phase1 i didnt have any probs with phase1 so far with phase 2 ive lost about 200 odd gens and had to restart from scratch about 4 times due entirely to no fault of my own
once was due to a machine crashing during an upload but the rest were nothing to do with my machine
