    DIg In and Fight!

We're holding them off, but just barely!

Alright guys, I've nearly tripled my production over the last 4 days, despite the client problems! Let's stay at it. They're starting to realize that they're gonna have to bring some more to get past us, so we're probably going to see them continue to increase their production a little at a time. We need to do the same...

I'm going to borg 2 XP2200's this weekend. I'm also going to get an Athlon 1200 up and running. I've got a dual MP2200 that should be up and running by the end of next week, and I'll probably go ahead and upgrade my pokey XP2400 game box to an XP 3000 on Tuesday or Wednesday. Then the XP2400 I'm replacing will upgrade an Athlon 1400.

Does anyone else have more machines they can borg/build? For those of you running Linux/Unix out there, the following cron entry has worked out pretty well for me:

    0 */24 * * * rm /usr/local/distribfold/foldtrajlite.lock; sleep 30; cd /usr/local/distribfold; ./foldit

I've modded the foldit script to run this command line:

    nohup ./foldtrajlite -f protein -n native -qt -rt -it > /dev/null &

Which essentially runs the process in the background. The cron job restarts the client every 24 hours. So far, I haven't seen a client grow beyond 200mb in the first 24 hours.

I've got a super simple CD based client installer nearly finished for WIndows, but I'm loathe to use it for borging until the client gets fixed. Right now, I'm just borging *nix boxes since I've found that restarting the client every day more or less negates the memory leak...

Got an AMD 1200+ box that I just put together out of spare parts. Don't have a disk in it, so it isn't too useful until I can go out and find something (hopefully cheap).

Got a 2.8 Ghz P4-HT 800 Mhz FSB box that is supposed to be shipped out to me on Monday. Probably have that up and going by Wednesday - assuming it arrives by then. (512 megs of DDR PC2700 ram - I'm sure I'll be out shopping for more ram on Thursday....)

I'm certain that I'll be replacing the MOBO in the AMD1200 system just as soon as I have the ability to boot something in that box... Grrr. That means I need a bigger switch too - maxed out on ethernet ports....

In the meantime, managing to do 100K dumps in the mornings I think we crossed back over to being #1 after my dump this morning.....

The only thing that might hurt my production any is an actual release of the Diablo 1.10 patch At least a couple of my machines will be crunching on that, should it ever actually get released

You mean like the 1.10 patch for starcraft that finally came out two months ago....

I might put a box on FDC, after the S||B gauntlet. Just for fun...

Yeah - I think the D2 patch is just over 2 years late at this point. Geez - hard to believe I've been playing Diablo almost non-stop for over 4 years now. I'm getting way too old for that......

Well, if the machine has 512M of RAM, may I suggest Knoppix? It'll boot up, find all your hardware, and get started. It runs in a RAM disk, hence my suggestion for 512 if you plan to run DF with -rt....

Main problem is that is doesn't have ANY boot device except the network card, and I'm not enough of a Windows Admin to figure out how to run a diskless device on my network.

Ummm... What is Knoppix, and could it, for example, boot off a floppy? (Those are really cheap....) Nahh - that wouldn't work probably - unless it somehow knew how to mount a network drive.....

    EDIT:

Ahh - did a search on Google. Linux that boots off a CD. I DO just happen to have a spare CD drive that I could install on the box. Hmm. Interesting possibilities there. I assume that Linux could somehow do an NFS mount of some area I set aside on some hard drive????

Absolutely. You could use smbfs to mount shares on a Windows box as well.

I burned an XP1800 in my remaining dual box. If anyone has a spare laying around they are not using, and care to donate it, I will throw it in and that would be another processor going for FreeDC. As it is, the S2460 is only running on one right now

Of course I will pay shipping.

Got two work machines going (Celeron 1400mhz boxes). Can't run -rt on them, because they only have 128 mb of CHEAP ram. Not great, but a little to help out.

Downloading as we speak - 700 MB == looks like a 6 hour download ....

If nothing else, it will be interesting to play with - since the majority of the file system comes up RO. Have any tips for doing an NFS mount to one of my XP boxes, so I can actually get DF in a folder and running? Or about running it in general?

Heck - it's probably going to take me most of the night just figure out how to get an IP address set....

Don't have a spare MB Chinasaur - sorry......

Prolly not. It supports DHCP, and boots directly into X Windows. You'll be amazed at how functional it actually is.....

Yeah, I came over from Ars, but you guys would still be in the lead without me. My 3 piddly comps aren't that good. My other 2 comps are too minimal to run DF, and for some odd reason, my boss won't let me install DF on all the computers in the library co-op <g>.

Thanks for the offers of 6-packs, but I'd rather brew mugs of my homeroasted coffee for everyone.

Of course, what would be truly cool would be to figure out a way to run a coffee-cooled computer...

Vanilla *flavoured* beans? The horror!!! <g>.

Vanilla sugar, though, is just fine. Or Indian spiced coffee.

I'm having trouble getting the coffee up the ethernet. Probably should have invested in those 100 mb NICs. Or maybe my grind is too course... I've got it! The coffee is reversing the polarity, and shifting my network to another dimension!

Guess you all will have to drop by, or I'll have to give lessons in how to roast your own coffee in a popcorn popper.

Apologies...I really shouldn't stay up late recompiling kernels, and getting punchy...
