Personal Home Pages & Email Accounts

I've been looking for ways lately to offer new stuff to our members. It's occurred to me that we might be able to let our members take advantage of the same infrastructure that we already use to support the Free-DC site.

We own the domain, and I own the servers that support it. This means, that I could offer members <yourname>@free-dc.org email accounts (on a spam filtered, virus check mail server), and web hosting for small, personal sites like <yoursite>@free-dc.org.

Now, whether this would be of any use or not, I don't know. So...here's where we find out. Vote & let us know. Do we make this available?

hm, not sure what to vote. I like the idea of offering it, but I probably wouldnt use it myself. I have enough email addresses as it is, and all the webpages I ever made stayed updated for about a month before i forgot about them, so i dont really need webspace. still, i think its a neat idea

Dyy, I think its a great idea that you are offering more to all the members of Free-DC.

Unfortunately, I already have all the emails and webspace that I need.

Like what Scoofy12 said, its still a neat idea.

    Sounds !

Spamfiltered and virus-checked mails sound great! But as the others mentioned before: I have enough e-mail-adresses too BUT a @free-dc.org-mail-adresse sounds classy!

Webspace? What kind of webspace? Ok, I would need no webspace too (have my own small and slow server ), but what features are you providing Dyy? Something like PHP, CGI, MySQL (which could "force" me to put my stats on the free-dc-server and turn off my own)? Or just pure *.html?

PHP/SQL supported webspace would be nice for stable stats that members might want to throw on the server. I know when I'm done with my chessbrain stats I would like them ran on fdc's webserver. Probably have better uptime than me

My webserver has to subcome to bad weather, nosey people, etc

This sounds great to me, and I would personally probably make use of both webspace and email. However, I don't think it is a good idea to enable all members of the forum to have such privileges. Perhaps only offering to seniour members, or something like that would be a good idea, else you might see people signing up just for webspace/email or to abuse those privileges.

What do I have to do to get a mail-account and some "dynamic" webspace?

What are the rules in general (if Dyy decides to offer that stuff) to get a mail-account and some webspace?
    []
    a certain number of posts
a voting of the top ten posters if the canidate is worthy enough to get the stuff
    paying money
an amount of contribution to team free-dc on a dc-project
forum-membership for a certain amount of time
    buying beer for IBs fridge
    etc etc etc

I personally think that the "buying beer for IB's fridge" is a very good condition to get a FDC email and webspace account.

So matey, bring on the booze.

    /me grab another six-pack from IB's fridge.

There should be alternative for "buying beer for IB's fridge", 'cause IB maybe would have to buy a bigger fridge!

With PY around I don't think IB has to worry about an overflowing fridge

kind of a CB side note here. I had talked with CJ @ CB about hosting the official CB forum which he didn't seem to need right now but stats were something that he was interested in.

magnav0x Dyy's offer seems like a good fit to fullfil this thread on the CB forum? It would allow the hourly parsing wouldn't it?

I wonder if you and Dyy colaborated with mack if this could all come together. Mack has his own team in CB maybe we could lure him over here in the process?

I'd be more than glad to provide stats for CB, just as long as I got a good connection. I'm hosting technosapiens.cc from the house on DSL, and it only has an output of 10kb/s. But we'll see what Dyyryanth thinks. I'm not sure what kind of bandwith they have here at FDC.org Maybe CJ would be interested in hosting them himself? I posted in the CB forums regarding realtime statistics. We'll see what happens.

I have a good f/t cable connection. I could provide with the tech assistance for setting up the servers.

I knew the idea with beer for IBs fridge was a good one

If PY 222 wouldn't drink all the beer of IBs fridge there would be a new good condition: buying IB a bigger fridge

    Just my take, but:

You could do the e-mail addresses so that only "team leaders" and othe important people would get them. Like giving e-mail to all stats guys, team poster people, etc. but not people who don't do anything. This would get more people to do things for the dite, and thewy would get the e-mail they desire...

gopher, unfortunately you must thank me!

If I do not drink the beer from IB's fridge, nobody else will do it and the good beer will turn bad.

So I am actually doing ya'll a favor by drinking more than my share!

    ** BURP **

/me open up another bottle of beer

Well the way you guys go thru beer IB will have to start having it deliverd by tanker truck. Just pull up the truck and tap it. Now if that happens you will see a lot of
