I think there might be some people who would enjoy a book I picked up a while ago called "Life Itself" and subtitled "Exploring the realm of the living cell".

It's aimed at an informed, general public and is not too long. It's an overview of cellular biology, so proteins are a minor topic. There are chapters on cell replication, gestation, how genes work, programmed cell death, cancer...
