Yes, indeed one of the nodes with the statistics cgi has died silently in the night

We are resurrecting it right now, we'll notify you when things are back to normal.

pssst, is the statistics cgi dead again??

  4. #4
    Sigh.
Yes, we had it fixed yesterday in the early afternoon and it seems to have died again overnight. We are having the sys admins look into possible causes. And we are clearly in need of some new speedy and reliable machines
Sorry for the continued inconvenience, I'll have statistics running as soon as the machine is back up, within the next 20-30 minutes.

It appears that the machine is in a poorer state than we realized. We are still working on it, so please be patient.

The stats are back up and happily calculating more points
The machine should be stable now, but if you notice any glitches, please let us know.

I now have done 2 major up-loads which should total close to 2-3 million points, yet the high flyers page only moved a couple hundred thousand points in that time...?

I gotta say here, my team is dribbling down to just a few now, from around 29 folders... Already 1 or 2 are quitting just before the next update....

We lost many because of all the trouble on each up-date and now this kind of stuff.... Electric bills have increased quite a bit and many are asking why we are even doing this...

I would hope the project people would be minimizing all these problems.... We're trying to help out here, but it's an uphill battle....

Question about the statsoutage and the upcomming new protein. Will this one be prosponed till lets say...thursday or will there be a possibility that there will come a new protein (and clientupdate) while the stats are on their behind?

My guess is that many people are holding back the data (buffering) till the stats are back up again

I've been uploading all day and can see the "High-Flyers" page change everytime I look at it..... As a matter-of-fact, if I do a refresh, when it comes back, it's higher.....

the stats have nothing to do with the changeover, why would they delay the protein change?

Agreed, let's not delay anything over this. Stats aren't everything (must keep repeating that!).

Oh yes they are. For the majority of us, they are the ONLY thing that keeps us interested in a project. Broken stats will kill a project faster than anything else I know, and we haven't had good stats since the 24th. I'll give it a couple more hours, then I'll simply move on to some other project...

I would advocate against being too hasty about leaving the project, but the point is valid. The stats are the only visible evidence of one's contribution.

We intend to replace the hardware ASAP, hopefully today, but until that gets done Im afraid there's not much we can do about it. Machines fail - expecially when they are running and being pounded on 24/7.

If it was only my own stats that were absent, I would not be very depressed. But because we all suffer, my own suffering is ok.

And I can stand another day without stats. I learned that at other projects at which the stats were down on a (more than) regular basis. DF stats are more stable than the average DC project.

I did Stanford projects and are used to be without stats

Ummm - Do you and Elena talk much?
We do appreciate the generous offer, but at the moment we are ok for hardware.
    - in this thread, only a few minutes before your post...

  38. #38
Yes, we do talk. When I said we are ok for hardware, I meant to convey the fact that we have machines with which to replace the malfunctioning node. Despite that, the machines that we have will fail eventually, as is the case with the stats machine. Sorry for the confusion.
