Thread: Server update

  1. #1

    Server update

We have been able to figure out the limiting step and now have to find and test a clever solution to this problem, hopefully by the end of work tomorrow.
Again, leave your machines alone, they are working as intended, let them cache, do not delete your receipts as this should not be necessary. Once we speed up the critical step the servers will catch up and start processing your tickets promptly again.

    Thanks for your patience.

I think this presumes our machines are fully adult and ignores the fact that some machines need kind and loving attention. I pat my G5 Mac every day and assure it that it is loved.

and it also assumes my hard drives can handle that many buffered units.

I have installed a quantum probability Raid 5 array. At any given time it has both 0 and 100 Terrabytes of free space, and as long as it thinks it can have both at the same time, it never runs out of Buffering space

Looing forward to waking up tomorrow and seeing Buffered Gens 0

I am not a Stats Ho, it is just more satisfying to see that my numbers are better than yours.

Hey Grumpy -- where can I get one of those quantum arrays?

Do you wish to share that information?

Hopefully everything will be up by thursdat cause it's a long weekend for us here in The Netherlands. Would be great to have those buffers gone....

    Good work. Keep us posted!

    That is good news Brian.
I have put one machine on DF for the moment, needed a fresh install as auto update failed, and it is obvious that on dial up, as the client uploads stand, it is unuseable.
I am looking forward to putting the other two back on the project once the fix is sorted.

Why wasn't it figured out during the beta phase?

    Ask that of microsoft

But if you think about it, you have a few beta testers running the stuff. you don't have all of you main hardware on it for a beta test. you really don't know if it will work 100% untill you do it, and have all of your users and all of your main equipment converted over.

it's like that for every conversion process, be it a distributed computing system or an accounting and personell database system.

  15. #15
What he said, plus not enough beta testers. In four days (with a really long protein) we've already posted more points than the beta version processed in two months. There just wasn't enough of a load to spot this.

If, in future betas, the points generated eventually get merged into the regular stats, more people would put more machine to running betas.

or, warn everyone that between two normal runs. The update will be beta for two weeks. just to load test. and yes points to be added.

Howard- do you recommend using the new DF package as mentioned in the news or just leave clients running the old one?

And what does '...include improved communication times with the server during upload' mean in terms of the current problems?

as I found out yesterday when our monitoring system said that the filesystem was nearly full on a couple of our machines... "What could be causing that?" I said, until I looked and realized it was DF. They do add up.

When it first uploads a unit, it contacts the server to check if its done yet less frequently. It won't make much difference at the moment, so you only need it to fix the -qt crash if that was a problem for you.

The speed issue was not noticed during the beta as there just was not the same volume of tickets (even though we did accelerate the programs upload rate).

I will post a description of the optimizations made for those interested, once its working well. Don't want to second guess myself here. One change involves using FastCGI at a critical step.

It appears that within the last hour, all of my machines have begun to upload results fairly quickly.

    HOWEVER !

They are all recording LOTS of 910 errors in the error log.

    now what?

I've seen quite a few 910 errors but this hasn't stopped any uploads since the last update. Just leave it to do it's thing.

same here...just have to see whether they are giving points...

I have uploaded several hundred gens from 7 machines, they all got 910 errors and the scores did not increment.

    There is a problem.

i had a box with about 50 left to do of the 10,000. Just started it up to run online and it's getting 910 errors. Stopped the client, ran off line for 5 gens. restarted online and getting 910 errors again.

    Doesn't look good!!

I have uploaded over a thousand gens this afternoon and only have 100,000 points and a ton of 910 errors to show for them. My whole team is having the same problem. What is going on overthere?

    Good idea... Very good....

Just switched all boxen to TSC and Lifemapper.

    FWIW,

I have two clients running on this very machine. One was re-started when Howard told us all to dump what we'd got and start again. I did and that client is getting 910s so far. Maybe that will change once it's cleared out the rest of this 250 that is screwed.

The other client was started late night 25th April and has successfully uploaded its first 37 gens with no errors at all.

Makes me wonder whether we all will have to wait for the first 250 to clear before the other cached sets of 250 go through OK.

Come on peeps who are running this , so many have left over the last few days to do other useful projects ... dont tell us that the ones that have stayed and folded away are going to get all that work flushed through no fault of there own , otherwise i see so many more moving on ormoving back to there previous distributed projects , im sure stanford would like my cycles back on their project along with many others ... please sort it and sort it fast whilst there is still enough users to make it worthwhile....... rant mode off

Somebody better fix this quickly. I have some very mad folders over at Xtreme Resources. We babyset the last one for a month but I think we are all pretty well fed up with this kind of thing. I guess I have just lost 5 days worth of folding on 13 rigs. I want reimbursed for a weeks electric!!
