We have one, dp and Marc_1 are supposed to be taking care of it.
They haven't mentioned it being down or out or gone
If it is down, they should let me know... I can put it over here if they want to.

    irc.aknarra.net port 6667 should work it's alive

Looks like we were still pointing irc.free-dc.org at the wrong IP. I've made the appropriate DNS changes (thanks for the heads-up IB) to take care of that.

If you use irc.aknarra.net , it always resolves as this is the Server Marc_1 created for us to use. #lobby is his channel and one we can use anytime.

irc.free-dc.org points to Marc_1's server and the channel is called #free-dc
which he added for our use.
dp used to have a 2nd server that mirrored it in case Marc_1's Server went down.

There is not much going on there, so everyone jump in and say hi now and then.

    Hi KIDS!!!!

No, I'm not dead, nor is the server....at least not my end of things.

I'm sorry if there have been some issues I was unaware of, but between work, beer and sex, I haven't paid as much attention to things as I probably should have.

I'm still up and running stable. Not sure what's up with DP's mirror as I haven't managed to catch him online lately.

I'm kind of glad things have started to pick up recently, as I was getting worried that it was all for nothing.

If anyone has any comments, suggestions or issues, please let me know. If the channel if going to be active again, I can add/drop OP's if need be.

And, as always, I'm willing to support Free-DC in whatever directions they head.

Hey gang, think of IRC as an IM, get logged on and just leave it running. Doesn't take away much from crunching, if you use mIRC, then it sits nicely in the tray.
If you have a question, just ask, and let it just hang out, someone will come by, look to see what conversations have been taking place, if any, answer any questions they can, then minimize it back to the tray, going about their business.

In other words, don't just pop in, say hello, then disappear because no one was watching at that hour... think IM

Doesn't seem to work at all.

Just get a "Can't connect" message in the Java window.

    Connecting to irc.free-dc.org 6667
    Unable to connect to server

Thanks for letting me know Angus.
I just changed it to point to irc.aknarra.net instead of chasing the DNS tail.
    Tested and works.

    Nope.

The screen still comes up defaulted to irc.free-dc.org, and won't connect, same error messages.

If I paste in the other address, it tries once on that server, fails, then flops back to trying the free-dc address and fails.

I know you're an old-timer, IB, but you'll get it eventually.

I used it, so did several others, so I know it's working...
If it's still using irc.free-dc.org, then you need to flush your cache

    Getting closer -

Now the Java applet comes up with aknarra.net, but the connections still won't work.

Most times, it also crashes Firefox.

Ah well - guess it was not meant to be.

All of you should be there in IRC 24/7...
doen't take any cpu cycles, minimized to the tray (in windows with mIRC at least).
That way you can ask a quick question, come back later and find an answer
Or give an answer to a question even

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but here goes.

Between Marc_1 and I, we've hosted the Free-DC IRC server(s) since the very beginning. Marc_1 has been on hiatus since September. His server has been offline since then, and I've been handling the 'load', if you want to call it that.

Here's my gripe. No one comes to the server. No one comes into any of the rooms. I've had the server up and running, fairly non-stop, because I continue to hope that it will see some use. However, with the server almost never seeing more than just me, and possibly a lurker, I'm beginning to doubt the need for an IRC server.

I have no problems letting it run. However, I will probably not frequent the server any longer, because it's not worth holding open the window... I know people are busy, and there are other things in their lives (hell, I definitely know this one first hand), but jeez... The last 'real' chatting done was at the Christmas party, and that was in December.

I want to make it clear, if no one see's a need for IRC for Free-DC, I'll shut down the server.

    Comments?

TBH DP, I`ve never really been a one for IRC. The forums or email are fast enough to cover most of my needs.
If you want a server hosted though to get it off your back for a while, I can put one up on my connection as long as it don`t run on port 80/8080 or the router access ports.
I`ve got a spare twin 900 Xeon going back online shortly and I can always give somebody access from a specific address.
Like an ol` 8086, slow but serviceable.
One advantage of old age...nobody can tell you how much cake you can eat

It would be sad to see a function/service not to be available, however, if no one is using it, it does seem to be a pointless service we are trying to provide...

I know I was using it a lot for awhile. It was a quick way to get answers to pressing questions to hardware and program/client problems.
I also don't use any Instant Messenger of any type tho...

I don't see many comments, so maybe folks here just aren't the IRC type.

I guess those that might be interested in keeping it alive should speak up or lose it.
