I'm kind of curious as to if there's a specific policy, if it has to be considered a flagrant violation, etc.

Does a person's apparent motives matter?

For example(the only one I could think of, in my case), I REALLY LIKE Tivo, I might post a message about it encouraging other people to check it out. They've got an incentive plan that I'd like to make use of if I get anyone enthusiastic enough to try it. But even without that it's still fun to brag on. What are my chances of this being considered spam?

Spam is posting things like "FREE iPod giveaway" if you complete "sponsors offers". That was one of several similar spam posts the particular user in question made.

But posting your affiliate link to a TiVo advertisement would also be considered spam, IMO. Free-DC isn't in the multi-level marketing business, or in the affiliates and partners business. As a known member of Free-DC, you'd be warned about it, and the post would be removed.

However when a brand new user gets on and posts blatant spam for two out of his first two messages, well, the situation didn't warrent warning him - he obviously joined just to post spam so I just locked him out.

That guy wasn't the first one to do so. Did you ban his IP?
