    Cool GPU challenge

Our team on this project is currently at #72 for total credit. My gaol is to reach 100,000,000 and see where we are. For those of you on the team who are not running GPUs it appears that this project will run on older and less powerfull ones. This could be your chance to make a lot of credit without investing in new hardware.

Laurenu2 and JohnWayne the clock is ticking and your headstart will soon be over.

Good thing GPU projects generate so many points.

The real question is how fast will we be able to move up the stats.

OK, for whatever they are worth, I'll throw in my two 4870's into the fray as well.

Does anyone else have problems with tasks erroring out? So far 2 out of 6 tasks have had errors. The application being used is "DNETC@Home v1.27 (ati14)" and I have 2x 4870's being used to crunch the tasks.

EDIT: I am on Vista 64-bit, and my driver version is 8.01.01.961... maybe a driver update is warranted, looks like the latest drivers are 10.something... :-/

I would start with updating the driver. I haven't had time to read through the message boards but I'll see what I can find. And thanks for helping out.

We've moved up to #64 with 2,291,377 credits.

Looks like it's going to be another great day for milestones.

JohnWayne please move to the right and prepare to be passed. I'm trying to chase down Laurenu2. He can run but he can't hide.

I looked through the message boards as well. It looks like some people have problems with various models/drivers/app. version combinations but nothing specific.

I've updated my drivers to the latest, so I'll see how it goes. I've heard some projects have issues with the newer drivers, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this project as far as I can tell.

    Onward and upward!

I have pulled over, but watch out, I may have absolutely no way to catch up.

I have had only one problem and that was with an Nvidia card. One GPU got stuck running it's first work unit. It was there for almost 9 hours with 0% done. I aborted, updated the drivers with the exact same driver and it has been fine since.

The odd thing I have noticed is that my ATI's take 26 and 30 minutes to complete a WU compared to my Nvidia's that take 9 minutes. Yet, my ATI's are out scoring the Nvidia's by 3 times. They must have combined multiple WU's because the ATI's are so fast.

    Run Lauren, run.

Bok and Andy Brady bite the dust.

Bok you suggested this project. Where are you?

If I understand what I read, there are different WUs for different cards. There are smaller one for less capable cards that get about 1500 credits and larger ones for cards like the 5850 that get about 5000 credits.

1,410,114 so far today. Possibly a new single project record.

Well, still having errors - so far 5 out of about 82 WU, so right around 6% error rate. Not sure what the deal is, but at least it still continues to crunch new WU's.

Looking at the WU's, other people are erroring out on them as well, so I'm guessing it's something wrong with the WU's themselves, not necessarily my computer/video cards.

I wonder that here are no big complains regarding credit stealing against this project as it was in the past against me.
Is it because dnetc@home is paying much more credits?
Or what is different or better?
    I'm a bit confused.

I think you will find that the only one who complained is not involved in this challenge and has made no posts here. This was started to have a little fun and friendly competition. I don't know why you feel the need to turn this sour and I don't care.

Well the team at the next big milestone, 10M, is BOINCstats - sounds like a decent goal before we start catching up to the big boys.

Nope, didn't happen. I haven't been to work yet. That machine runs for about two hours and then shuts down. I'll put the card in a different machine tomorrow and then we'll be smoking. The weather here has been cooler and the airconditioners can keep up. When it gets hot the cards throttle down and when it cools off they throttle back up.

I have one machine that has 3 GTX260s in it and I was think of replacing them with 4 HD5850s. That would double my output.

Strange, last night I connected to my computer I've got running DNETC on via Windows Remote Desktop, did my thing, and disconnected with just as I always do. But then I come in this morning and since I disconnected, I've errored out on every task with no computation done at all. Now it says I've hit my daily quota of 400 tasks so I guess I'm not going to get any work done today. :-(

Are you using an ATI card?

I have noticed the same thing on my system. I have an ATI 4870 and when I use Windows Remote Desktop to connect to that machine for whatever reason BOINC can no longer see the GPU. If you open BOINC and look at the message log you will see some kind of "Can't find GPU or lost GPU" error. When that happens every single task you have queued errors out. Once you log out of Windows Remote Desktop, the GPU is found again (most of the time) and assuming you didn't burn through your daily quota, you can keep going.

Any one else with ATI or NVIDIA experience this? I'm not sure if this is an ATI driver thing or a Windows Remote Desktop thing.

    Jeff.

Yep, this happens for me with ATI/RDC also.

I've heard others say this doesn't happen with VNC.

Yes, this is with an ATI card (2x 4870's).

In my message log, there's a message when I logged in says GPU has become unusable, and then a message when I logged off saying GPU has become usable followed by the erroring tasks.
